    I want some help…

I am currently using Endeavour OS with hyprland, and am using Caelestia

It is not the best experience. Is there any OS that comes with hyprland preinstalled? I want a beautiful looking desktop.

This post is proving that when you call someone a nazi half a dozen times in two paragraphs, it has quite the opposite effect than what you seek in people who aren’t as deep in the leftist bubble as you are.

Doesn’t just apply to nazis by the way. Make such an impassioned tirade against pretty much any person or thing hyperfocusing on one specific trait, and most listeners unfamiliar with the matter will be put on guard rather than convinced. “Why is this person so desperately trying to convince me about this? There must be more to this than they’re letting on.” Food for thought maybe.

This link provides zero information on how an open source project can be considered “nazi” (or far-right). Just a statement by the author themselves that these people are far-right.

This is a fair point, but the good thing about Omarchy is that it has been a great and easy gateway into Linux for me and peoole like me. Sure there’s Ubuntu and Mint, but those just feel like Windows with extra steps. Omarchy, and especially Hyprland and the keyboard oriented approach, have opened my eyes for what cool stuff can be done. I’m really sad for the nazi stuff. I’m actually moarning a bit, because I liked Omarchy. But I do have a sense for what I want to and can do with my OS now. I’m still a bit nervous for setting up drivers and such, but I’ll give it a try

This is sad, I didn’t know he was racist. Is there other alternative? I wanted to get my cousin get into Linux, omarchy looked great, maybe I will stick to Ubuntu. Anything else that has good UI? maybe I can borrow ideas(steal) from someone else’s setup

Lots of good options, but plain ol Fedora with KDE can look great and is reliable, or if you want something more experimental like omarchy then CachyOS would be good.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I think it’s possible to separate creator from work.

I think the devs of GrapheneOS and Valetudo are kind of dicks, for example, but I still use their software. That shouldn’t be seen as personal endorsement for any of their views.

Separate omarchy from DHH and it’s still omarchy. An arch linux installer and dotfile collection created by claude. It could disappear and nothing of value would be lost.

Not when it comes to consumerism. By consuming their product you are directly supporting that creator. Installing omarchy boosts their numbers which attracts more users. We could all just not do that and not support nazis

I think it’s possible to separate creator from work.

It’s a sensible, reasonable thing to do, to which I agree in generally.

With Omarchy and DHH in particular however, I’m not so sure. Not because of “his opinions” or “him being a dick”, but because just how undercooked his takes have gotten. That too reflects in Omarchy, which is style (for the lack of a better word) over substance.

And that you can indeed use to deduce that you should probably not trust it with your banking data or whatever.

So I would argue that it is a question of which part you want to separate and for what reason, essentially.

The “work” in question does not exist in a vacuum tho, and will very likely be used to further the worldview of the creator. Anti-woke moderation here, a blogpost about great replacement there etc.

Like I don’t have anything against harry potter, but the money you pay for it go through jk rowling directly to a bunch of right wing nobheads.

and will very likely be used to further the worldview of the creator.

This is absolutely correct. What worries me a bit is that it’s also what those guys bank on. Being perceived the “less miserable” space I mean (as long as you’re some white dude I guess).

I’m not sure if the… uh… “meme” helps in that regard, because, while the idea is to oppose them, it I think just contributes to their story and frame.

So, ideally, to be effective against (alt-)right, we would want to be the cool, capable people, you want to be around.

(This, I think, is also why omarchy is so style over substance. it’s trying to own the “cool”-ness)

There is a level of irony on this topic regarding Lemmy. In that the lead dev is persona non grata in a majority of instances and his instance is defederated by many others.

“Death of the Author” is one of those questions that needs an answer but people wont be consistent in their responses, especially weird online communities like here.

Isn’t Linux political because Linus/people didn’t like how Microsoft was running computing or just wanted their own digital sovereignty?

As far as I’m aware, everything is political because we don’t all agree on how things should be run or used. The fact you have the CHOICE to use Linux, is political. The fact you have clean drinking water (hopefully!) is political, because there are assholes who wouldn’t give a care in the world if yours was contaminated as long as they get a buck or two.

Not attacking you or your stance, but everything really is political, whether you like it or not.

I watched almost 10 minutes of a youtuber shilling it and my takeaway is “linux for Elon Musk”. The marketing was leaning heavily into “powered by the bedrock of archlinux. Use this and you can have honorary arch cred”. And like, no! As an arch user, I started on ubuntu. It took me years to gain the competencies to be an arch power user. And throughout my learning journey I had the loving embrace of an operating system that didn’t expect me to learn fucking keyboard shortcuts. It ships with a keyboard first tiling window manager, and those are HARSHLY unforgiving. I tried i3 after I’d already moved into my gentoo phase, and I still found it tough and ultimately did not stick with it, realising if I want a keyboard first workflow I can create shortcuts for my stacking window manager and still have the mouse to fall back on. That and its intentional 80s hacker aesthetic just REEKS of I use arch btw elitism. Trash distro. I don’t want ubuntu to stay the face of linux, but I’d rather the title go to an old guard like Fedora, not this poser.

This wants to be the distro you use if you want people to think you’re vewy smart.

Finding out its vibe coded and the creator is an Elon wannabe just reinforces my initial impressions

I read through all the comments here, and at time of writing I kind of don’t like that Hyprland and Omarchy are both labelled as nazi software… It is mentioned in multiple comments that being an asshole developer is not the same as being a nazi, yet people still call Hyprland “nazi software”. Why? Vaxry is an asshole, but according to this nazi<->asshole categorisation, I don’t find it accurate that people here (with many likes on each such comment) rightfully call Omarchy nazi software and give examples why that is true, and then just casually attach Hyprland into the nazi category because… (???) the dev is an asshole?

Mostly because the dev has fostered a community that is aggressively bigoted and not only refuses to do anything about it but defends it and participates in the hate. Primarily against trans people but they’ve had plenty of other controversies from their discords and forums. More than just “being an asshole”

Yeah, might be true, their discord is a toxic cesspool. And yes, there was that case of the power tripping transphobic mod. But c’mon, “nazi”… If anything, it weakens the nazi tag of a literal nazi.

Not sure if you are aware, but hyprland even has a code of conduct now (check on github) due to those events. It could be argued that it is a bit lax or not as enforced as we would want, but it is a step in the correct direction. Compare that to DHH who seems to be on a straight downward trend with no signs of stopping…

Im not saying they’re equivalent, just saying why people might call vaxry a nazi. I’m not using that terminology myself, I’d say he’s somebody who is way too cozy with bigots for me to feel comfortable in that community or the things they touch. But i get where people are coming from, whether somebody says that he’s nazi adjacent or whatever they’re generally conveying the same idea in harsher terms. I’m glad they’re cleaning up their act with a CoC though, I really liked the hyprland experience when I used it, and it would be a net benefit for everybody if they made the ecosystem around it welcoming and safe for all stripes of people. But that trust takes time and active showing of good faith to build

Let’s add Bryan Lunduke and his shitty “distro” to this list as well. https://github.com/BryanLunduke/LCOS

For those out of the loop: He’s not a straight up Nazi supporter like DHH, but Lunduke is vocally anti-LGBTQ and commonly criticizes LGBTQ support from other distro maintainers. Notice the “No weird politics” line in the screenshot on his Github. That’s what he’s referring to.
