Im willing to bet most people do not look at the price tag before buying it. Same with soda, chips, etc. Maybe they don’t even look at the register. They just swipe their card, same as always.
This follows my conspiracy theory that grocery stores in areas with high SNAP benefits ussge increase the prices on everything significantly. I have some family in an area where a lot of people rely on SNAP, and spent $20 on a pack of five hot dogs.
But I don’t understand how this candy is SNAP eligible. Last year SNAP began banning snacks & sweets & junk food.
Old photo maybe?
Why is it SNAP eligible? This is what happens when we just pay out without regulating it, whereas Medicare does negotiate prices. It’s the same with student loans+tuition.
It’s eligible because it’s food. It prevents starvation. Plus it’s hard to micromanage what poor people eat. On top of that, poor grandmas with diabetes can use it to prevent a coma if their sugar is dangerously low.
In Texas, candy bars aren’t eligible. Neither are soft drinks, including uncaffeinated diet drinks, but ice cream, cake, pies, and chocolate milk are still eligible for now. But they’re planning to take that away from poor people too. Also “luxury” meats like steak.
After that I imagine they plan to make poor people eat out of dirty buckets filled with offal and rotting vegetables.
If you make enough that you get SNAP/EBT, you’re not living your best life.
Let the mfer have a candy bar. God damn
But this is America, where you must be punished for being poor.
It’s junk food, not fancy nice food. It’s bad for you, full stop. Nobody is going to pay that price for junk food. This also goes for fast food that now thinks it’s some luxury food, it’s not, it’s still junk. For God sakes, stop giving these soulless, oney sucking corporations your money. It’s that simple. This bs stops when the money stops.
The corporations setting prices are all in cahoots to put all the fat poor fucks on a diet, or criminalizing them if the people resort to stealing the overpriced junk food they’re addicted to.
Seriously, for that price you could eat real foodlike substances, perhaps even something that was in the ground more recently than it was in a factory.
Gotta disagree with the “no one will pay for it” part of your comment though. People can’t get enough of anything that’s bad for them! Most of them will sit there in their micro plastic shedding clothes, not getting exercise, under a UV light, smoking a cigarette while drinking alcohol and downing Tylenol and Advil by the bottle, while blasting their eyeballs with blue light and huffing VOCs before they ever touch a raddish.
No, it doesn’t. They influence the FDA and it’s “generally as safe” stuff.
Funny how they say it’s 120 calories per 1/8th of the pack 🙄 Yeah guys, that’s how people eat candy bars.
1/8th at a time.
The online nutrition information for a king size is similar, in that it says 150 calories for 1/3 of the bar. So the individual one is about 450 calories, while 2 of them is 960, 60 calories more than it should be.
Or I’m reading the fine print on the packaging wrong, in which case it says 120 calories per 1/6th of the pack, which would bring it out to 720 calories, or, two bars smaller than the “king size,” which seems deceptive, considering the packaging says it’s a “super king 2 bars.”
Just deceptive marketing and shrinkflation, all wrapped up in one shitty package!
Don’t buy it?
I am so glad I am not the only one who thought that this was a 2 pound bar…
720 calories for 6.49 isn’t bad honestly
2 lb bar @ 6.49 is 20¢/oz.
Snickers King Size is about $3 @ 3.29 oz.
The 2lb bar despite the sticker shock is a far cheaper candy bar by weight.
How in the world are you getting that the bar is 2lbs? No one makes a 2lb candy bar; the size would be huge. The bar in the picture certainly isn’t big enough to be 2lbs. Googling shows a Reese’s Fast Break Super King to be 5.25oz total, or $1.236/oz.
Reese’s Fast Break Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Nougat Super King Size Candy, Bar 5.25 oz https://www.walmart.com/ip/Reese-s-Fast-Break-Peanut-Butter-Nougat-Super-King-Size-Candy-Bar-5-25-oz/3257536086
2 pounds is 32 oz.
Ah, I got confused thinking it was a 2lb bar, some absurd weight for the price. Def not. My mistake.
That’s then $1.25/oz which is definitely a very expensive bar.
a king sized snickers costs 3 bucks.
this candy bar is a deal compared to that, lol.
edit: I’m wrong, that says 2 Bars on the edge, not 2 pounds (why is lbs short for pounds anyway?!)
Lbs is a shortened version of the Greek word for measuring scales. So it actually doesn‘t mean a specific weight, but more like “weighed” or something.
While true that originally it also meant “balance” (in late latin we later got the word bilanx for scales - literally two plates), lb is for latin libra, and it was an actual specific weight (with a corresponding economical value in the Roman as coin) in use since the Roman republic, and it has remained in use for more than two millennia all over the world (with slighly different values depending on time and place, but usually between 350-450grams). It’s not an accident the the UK pound stirling coin still has the same L shaped symbol £, same as the italian lira, etc
Pound in other languages is “libra”, as is weight scale …
How ironic that Americans use a foreign language to describe their unit of measurement that is used nowhere outside the USA.
It’s literally used in the UK, wheee it fucking came from.
One bar is 5.25 oz so… 43.6 USD/kg In Norway a 51g bar cost me 684.31NOK/kg. At today’s Google fex rate is 73.33 USD.
But then it’s an import from the US and who knows what gets tariffed and taxed like fuck these days
They better get used to people not buying their candy bars.
But if you break it in half, you’ll have 2 bars, and that’s like 50% off! Break it again, 50+50 that’s 100% off! Why stop there?! Trump did say he was gonna cut prices by 700%.
Promises made, Americans wept 🙃
What type of store is this in?
Gas stations, or department stores around me gouge the shit out of you for snacks/candy. Easily $5-6cad for a chocolate bar. A dollar store though, usually sells an Oh Henry (~58g) for $1.25 or $2 for a ‘share size’ (the 2 smaller bars in one package ~82g).
Still not great, but much better than $6.50 (USD I assume)
I also see this exact price for these at the fancy upscale grocery store across the street from me in addition to the gas stations.
How big are they? The is zero indication that I can see.
148g with a google search.
They’re about the largest ones you can buy lol. It’s a super king sized that is two full sized bars in the package. Roughly 150g total, and 720kcal for the whole thing.
This particular store is also inflated. The same thing is $3.29 at the store by me.
Yes I thought something must be off.
I guess OP was infuriated about the wildly inflated price at this shop.
Not about prices in general. But that is one oversized bar. 😋
Prices in general are nuts, but cherry picking outliers like this doesn’t help.
No and he doesn’t even write the name of the supermarket.
Which is the real infuriating thing here IMO.I’m willing to bet not even a super market. Probably some overpriced gas station/quick stop kind of place. Those are the ones that tend to inflate the prices like this, catching people getting gas that want a quick snack.
quick stop kind of place.
Yes of course, that must be it.
I’m pretty certain you can buy these at Normal for about 20 kroner.
