I think, that in my case it is trauma that made itself appear later in life. Because it was never an issue when I was younger. Even dentist tried to say the same to me.
Have you ever tried the thumb thing? It works when I’m brushing my teeth.

Also not the same person but it works for me.
Hold your thumb tight in the same hand (make a fist, thumb inside), and know that it stops you from gagging.
It’s obviously placebo, but even knowing that, it helps SO much.
I did, not thumb but spoon, but in my case it seems to be psychological trauma that I got later in life, since I did not had it when I was 12 or so.
It did for me at least, started practicing once I hit puberty cuz I’ve always been a little freak.
