I wonder how many linguistics are in the manosphere for purely academic reasons. It must be amazing seeing a language evolve at basically hyperspeed

I’ve seen a few articles written about it. One was basically explaining that in anonymous spaces like 4chan, being fluent in the “language” is a way to signal that you belong since you have no identity tied to your social status. As that language seeps into the mainstream, it becomes less valuable as a signal to the in group and therefore new words and phrases need to be created to keep the language as esoteric as possible. There was a lot of musing on whether these phrases getting picked up in more mainstream uses normalizes these groups, or whether it’s more a form of mockery that takes away legitimacy.

That’s true for every group of people, especially young people.

Every family has their own words or phrases only they use.

it is very interesting indeed, but then again most people i’ve seen studying linguistics are some mix of the following: female, queer, alternative, left, feminist. which means that for most the manosphere and its hostile language is pure horror.

i absolutely despise the fact that pretty normal people have started the hatred nazi misogyny speak and talk about …maxxing and being …pilled.

-pilled comes from red-pilled which is a reference to The Matrix, created by the Wachowski sisters, who latter declared it to be heavily influenced by their experiences as transitionin women, so the public using it is just taking it back from the losers.

As a cis-male linguistics student I can confidently say that this is not the case. An ostensibly female, blue-haired, feminist friend wrote her bachelor thesis about classifying reddit users in r/asmongold by language and the correlating amount of engagement in discourse in said community to see if she can form groups by classifying them by language and find out if she can form a relation between those groups and the topics (gaming, “politics”, misogyny, racism, etc.) they talk about.

It’s derived from a combination of “female” and “android”. It’s meant to strip women of their personhood when taking about them.

Um im going to go out on a limb here and say that “foid” is pretty fucking weird and really, really offensive.

                Same with “roastie”

I mean those terms hyper escaped the Nazi roots and are now just out there, only related to it if they’re used in that way
