It has the feeling of reading the Folger annotated Shakespeare editions.
I think I just became a tiny bit stupider.
I feel like I need a shower followed by a nice loooong bike ride after reading that…
OK. This new “incomprehensible” slang is actually very readable to me. There are Gen X slang/slur combos that make much less sense.
It’s just an explanation of incel terminology.

I guess so, but I’ve also made the amazing decision to get black out drunk I. the morning and stay that way, I dunno anymore
i understood everything. (30, no social media apart from lemmy)
please euthanise me
I’m so sorry. There’s still hope
Nop
I wonder how many linguistics are in the manosphere for purely academic reasons. It must be amazing seeing a language evolve at basically hyperspeed
I’ve seen a few articles written about it. One was basically explaining that in anonymous spaces like 4chan, being fluent in the “language” is a way to signal that you belong since you have no identity tied to your social status. As that language seeps into the mainstream, it becomes less valuable as a signal to the in group and therefore new words and phrases need to be created to keep the language as esoteric as possible. There was a lot of musing on whether these phrases getting picked up in more mainstream uses normalizes these groups, or whether it’s more a form of mockery that takes away legitimacy.
That’s true for every group of people, especially young people.
Every family has their own words or phrases only they use.
it is very interesting indeed, but then again most people i’ve seen studying linguistics are some mix of the following: female, queer, alternative, left, feminist. which means that for most the manosphere and its hostile language is pure horror.
i absolutely despise the fact that pretty normal people have started the hatred nazi misogyny speak and talk about …maxxing and being …pilled.
-pilled comes from red-pilled which is a reference to The Matrix, created by the Wachowski sisters, who latter declared it to be heavily influenced by their experiences as transitionin women, so the public using it is just taking it back from the losers.
that’s a very interesting point of view i didn’t consider yet. thanks!
As a cis-male linguistics student I can confidently say that this is not the case. An ostensibly female, blue-haired, feminist friend wrote her bachelor thesis about classifying reddit users in r/asmongold by language and the correlating amount of engagement in discourse in said community to see if she can form groups by classifying them by language and find out if she can form a relation between those groups and the topics (gaming, “politics”, misogyny, racism, etc.) they talk about.
first of all, i’m sorry if i created the impression that all linguists were female (and the other attributes i mentioned). rather i was trying to say that an overwhelming majority of the people starting linguistics at my uni carried at least some of the attributes i mentioned. (a very unscientific observation over the last five years)
please elaborate on what is not the case.
you mention a bachelor thesis, but not the result. can you give a quick summary of what she found?
All good, I think I phrased my comment in a confusing way :) It is true that the humanities have a higher percentage than other fields. I just wanted to add that many female linguists that I know are also dialed into the manosphere/incel/4chan speak even though they are the target of this dehumanising language, kind of in a morbidly curious way lol. Many of my acquaintances are also organising politically, which probably adds to this. As for the results, I sadly haven’t met her in a while, I’m sorry. Ohh and I added the cis-male part to clarify that the information is just second hand.
…didn’t you just prove TerHu’s point that most people they’ve seen studying linguistics share some similarities with your friend by sharing this?
I had to explain to my roommates what a “foid” is the other day.
Ugh.
What is a foid?
It’s derived from a combination of “female” and “android”. It’s meant to strip women of their personhood when taking about them.
As a moid I’m disgusted to learn that there’s such a thing being passed around. 🤢
One doesn’t have to search hard to find these sentiments on Lemmy.
Oh, totally. I encounter people telling suicidal people to kill themselves on a not so rare basis.
Uh, thank you. I expected something way weirder ans offensive.
Um im going to go out on a limb here and say that “foid” is pretty fucking weird and really, really offensive.
Same with “roastie”
Ok now what’s a roastie…
Nothing wrong with twinkmaxxing if you’re queerpilled
On the internet, nobody can tell you’re not a scumbag
girlpilled?
I mean those terms hyper escaped the Nazi roots and are now just out there, only related to it if they’re used in that way
original post this is attempting to jack the style of:
“Clavicular was mid jestergooning when a group of Foids came and spiked his Cortisol levels 😭
Is Ignoring the Foids while munting and mogging Moids more useful then SMV chadfishing in the club?”
I more or less understood, but tbh the explanation was incredibly helpful.
The one thing I did not understand was ASU. And now I understand why, it’s the acronym of a school name in the States.
It helped me with understanding, but not with caring.
One possible correction: given that this is a streamer, I’m guessing they’re referring to ASU the video game.
Somehow it makes even less sense with the explanation.
At least I understand the words in the explanation.
But who the duck dislike being called a good boy?
bad boys
Bad boys
Whatcha gonna do
Whatcha gonna do when they come for you
I believe its called “fragile masculinity”.
I don’t feel strongly positively or negatively about it, but if it’s spoken with clear intent to diminish me, I like that person and their application of the phrase less.
Words are just words. It’s how and why they’re used that matters.
If someone tries to belittle you by calling you ‘good boy’ you look them square in the eyes and tell them “pardon me but I’m the best boy actually”
None of these words are real, I refuse to believe they are
So you’re choosing your subjective reality, huh? Well, make sure to consider the greater good above your own personal comfort when you choose your reality.
Some people take exaggerated phrases of frustration way too seriously.

Love the Shakespeare reference!
What?
In fair Tempe where we lay our scene. It’s right at the end.
