They are not encrypted. Instance owners can read them. It’s not technically any worse than Discord, but it is harder to know and trust the people that may see what you write. Keep sensitive info to platforms like Signal or Matrix.
I didn’t know that, but I usually ask them if they want to discuss on Discord or Matrix next, since Lemmy’s dms are not that great

My gf lives 40 miles (abt an hour drive) away and that already feels like too much. I stay up there for days when I visit. But we’re also considering moving in together soon :3
My partner and I lived about 60 miles apart for over 2 years before moving in together recently. It can be done!
