The way I heard it, great potato famine wasn’t as big a deal as the extreme exploitation, colonization, and failure of industrialization as well as landlords and religious apartheid that began earlier.

    Which very much surprised me.

Doner with potato? WTF. Where I come from, “Döner” is meat and vegetables in flatbread, I don’t see where potato is supposed to come in.

Either way, before potatoes were introduced in my country, most people ate bread or grain-based porridges/gruels with every meal. Since it was usually wholegrain, that might even have been healthier than peeled potatoes.

You guys would be amazed how much potato meal is used for

Potato starch goes into paper and board manufacturing, textiles, adhesives, pharmaceuticals, and also food as a thickener.

Some potatoes are also fermented into alcohol (vodka) or bioethanol

Depends on how you define, “potato.” There are some really similar tube roots, like sweet potato and batatas. Taro, beets, parsnips and other veggies make really good chips.

What has kekab to do with potatoes? Don’t get near my kebab with those abominations.

some places use french fries for volume instead of cabbage/coleslaw. Ngl, they be cookin, potatoes absorb the sauce and the meat juice, making it incredibly more tasty.

In various places with turkish diaspora, the locals treat it as a generic takeway, so various other things are served that aren’t part of turkish cuisine, like chips, pizza, maybe fried fish.

Turkish people remind me of the Chinese in a way, they know how to adapt their cuisine to meet whatever the locals like. There are a handful of very successful bagel shops run by Turkish people near where I live.

I’ve never seen that, but it was my first guess as well. People here are already doing Doner-boxes with fries, meat and sauce in a takeout box, I’m assuming for people under doctor’s orders to eat a veggie-free high-grease and high-sodium diet.

In Belgium, fries are added to the Dürüms. Surprisingly good. But in Berlin where Döner Kebab is at home, potatoes in the Dürüm is a special dish that only some places even have on the menu. I wonder where OP is from

And I whish even less had it on their menu. I have had more that one dürüm ruined by such additions. Sometimes without asking and sometimes because I forgot how much I hated it the last time.
