    Idea: cars all have too much AI in them anyway, let’s make good use of it. If a car detects that the driver turns or changes lanes without signaling 5 times in a row, it caps the speed to 50 km/h (or 30 in an urban area) for 5 minutes. Make this a mandatory safety feature in all new cars, like how they make noises if you don’t wear a seatbelt.

      In fairness, any time I drive near construction my car starts screaming about how I’m drifting out of my lane because it doesn’t recognize cone supremacy - so if cars did this I know my car would constantly be like “I can’t let you do that.”

      I use my signals, I’ll pass the government mandated test. Yes, even in turn lanes, I’ll ace it. (Also, you should turn in to whatever lane you’re in, not “whichever one I want.”)

      I think the immediate aftermath of an unsignaled lane change is the worst time for the car to automatically cutting from presumably highway speeds of like 65-70 mph (105-113 kph) [assuming they weren’t speeding…] down to 31 mph (50 kph) if there are people driving in the new lane. Not only did someone pull out in front of you but you also have to immediately slam on the brakes to have a chance of not hitting it

      The fact that modern cars are backseat drivers but not competent drivers is why I don’t own a car anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I used signals, but it’s a million little nitpicks that add up. They’re features for other people, not the user, that I’m only buying because I have no real choice. Heaven forbid any actual legal enforcement of those rules by people - it must be done by making products more annoying.

      Cars (and humans) can either drive for me or STFU about my driving.

        I know exactly what you mean. All the little alerts that remind me to keep my eyes on the road or whatever are actually more distracting than just letting me look at the road. All of these things are designed for people who suck at driving so much that they shouldn’t be allowed to drive a car, anyway.

        How do you detect these occurrences then? You can’t differentiate a lane change from a curving road without analyzing the environment.

          Back when I had a car, it had lane-keeping assistance. It followed road lines and edges automatically, which meant it also resisted turning into any lines and edges it detected if you didn’t have your signal on. Could probably keep a counter for lane changes and turns at marked intersections.

            Yeah, that’s AI in my book. It’s almost certainly the output of machine learning using lots of sensor data, trained on mountains of older data. How is that not AI?

              From what I understand, the output from programs using a machine learning algorithm continuously change as more inputs change the variable weightings of whatever model they have.

              But the lane and road edge detection thresholds for my car’s sensors were likely determined (i.e, they picked and set fixed averages) from lots of data and set them as static values in the program to compare against. That’s just using data and statistics as usual.

              There are toy cars for students of programming to write simple self-driving algorithms from sensor data to drive without colliding into walls and black or colored tape. Same idea. But I wouldn’t call it “AI,” which is a marketing term to begin with, not a scientific one.

              Anyway, certainly no ML algorithm was running on the car’s system. The driving assist was very simple and predictable, and it was manufactured in 2018.

      Lets not make it unsafe for other people.

      Just add a really loud horn every time they forget their turn signal.

        Unironically, this is the best solution. Make it more annoying to not use the signal than to use it. Shake the wheel, sound an alarm, nudge back into the lane. Make using turn signals the selfish option. Lots of cars already do this to some small extent.

    This and pulling into an intersection you don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of clearing before the light changes (Bonus points for the vehicle being an 18 wheeler and having hazardous cargo).
