Fleischer animation studios was amazing. I want to say they invented the rotoscope? If not maybe I’m tripping. Either way, their color classics collection was absolutely fucking phenomenal and has so many bangers. I think pretty much all of them are public domain now, aside from one one specific cartoon that Burger King now owns the rights to for some fucking reason (I think it was a commercial if I do recall correctly that they utilized it in) color classics if I recall correctly, were competition for Disney studios, merry melodies? I’m a little bit Rusty on all of it but I just know that my parents pirated a shit ton of them on VHS tapes in SLP mode or something like that. God I have such vivid memories of some of these. ‘Play it safe’ was a great one, ‘Small fry’ stands out as well as a classic in my mind. I’m going to have to go on a nostalgic binge down the rabbit hole now.

It’s difficult for people to understand now, but that used to be considered adulthood.
I’m old, and my parents were old when I was born. My aunts and uncles would have been born from 1905 to the early 1930s. Most of them finished school at grade 8 at 13 or 14 and moved from home shortly after. By 16 it was common to be living in a boarding or rooming house and working a job. The invention of “teenager” as a distinct phase of life is largely a post-second world war phenomenon and is inextricably linked to the change of literacy from grade 8 to a highschool education, and now college. Along with that educational shift there has been a change in what we consider a “child”.
