Rant:
I am at work (food service) so I wasn’t able to just step away to order a Steam Controller. I started trying to a few minutes after launch and had to deal with Steam’s Mobile Authenticator bullshit (why can’t I use a different 2FA app?!?). Anyways I had customers and responsibilities so I had to put it away until I got a quiet second.
By the time I had a chance to run to the bathroom, about 50 minutes after its launch, the “checkout” button for my cart wasn’t working. So I went to the previous page, and it was sold out.
I’m so bummed; I’ve been essentially obsessing over it since the release date was announced. The wireless puck was a huge pull for me, because my DualShock 4 wireless USB adapter broke (some device’s usb must’ve supplied it bad voltage I think?), and the price to get a new one of those at this point just doesn’t make for me. Also a local electronics repair store pretty much told me to screw off, cuz of the price of the dongle.
Bluetooth isn’t as responsive, and repairing for each device is a PITA. Plus other features of the Steam Controller were exciting for me! Super disappointed.
I got the OG steam controller and it was … ok. I ended up leaving it in a drawer in favor of a more traditional controller. I’m honestly surprised at the hype for the new one.
Just gotta treat release day as announcement day and in a few weeks/months you’ll be able to get one just fine
I hate that they reused the name…
Lol, I was at work when they dropped it, and when I got home it was already sold out. However, I for some reason got one into my cart on my phone. The purchasing didn’t work, but for some reason I got the order though by adding a game to it. Wonder if anything will show up, but I’ve at least I sent them the money.
Not worth it being an early adopter for anything. First production runs are always a shot in the dark.
Yup, it’s why I’m not too bothered about “missing out”. I really hope it goes well for Valve, it looks super promising, more so than their first whack at a controller (which I own), and their hardware quality has always been pretty on point. But there’s no sense rushing to get one when they’ll likely be available again before too long, and by that time there will be word on whether they’re great or not.
You would think after a while people would start to get that and you would see a little more patience about these things.
I definitely got myself excited and bought into the launch hype.
Valve has a really solid track record at this point in time though. And most of the features aren’t new: they’ve existed in the Steam Deck. Also we’ve seen reviews from different publications now, and I watched GN’s teardown, which blew me away with how repairable the device is. Unfortunately for me, I understand why the demand is there. But I do hope there’s more stock soon
How did this happen?
I can’t imagine enough people spamming f5 for a controller???
Were supplies extremely limited?
i was definitely spamming f5 on my lunch break. n=1
- there were absolutely scalpers spamming F5
- yes, supplies were very limited
Can’t stream like make sure tone spent enough on steam to verify your not a scalper?
Human garbage. Scalpers.Demand, a lot of people wanted it. Same happens to all Valve hardware. I bet it will be back in stock soon.
yup! don’t panic buy anything over MSRP. just wait for the next round
I’ve been trying till 10 sharp. Had my steam wallet preloaded since last week. And I sfill couldn’t get one despite spamming the continue button.
Got it in my cart 2 minutes before the official drop, and couldn’t get through payment. Hopefully they restock quickly, but I feel your pain
I lucked out I guess. Just popped into the mobile app at like 9:57 and checked out with zero issues
