Poor radio signal. Im not sure if these codes were designed on the same premise as the phonetic alphabet but its the only good reason I can think of. Maybe they just wanted to sound cool.
I did a little websearching and the reasons were brevity and secrecy. This is a reasonable rationale for some of the codes, but not for ones like “acknowledged”.
