Customers in Europe can pre-order the €649 phone by making a €99 down payment, with the balance due before the phone ships in September. But only 1,000 units will be available as part of this “limited batch.”

Even if we get a linux phone in 5 or 10 years, its features and app support will be so boring that it’s just not a real alternative. Even today it’s hard for open source apps to compete with proprietary apps. There’s so much that we abstain from just because we insist on freedom

the system was made in a way where proprietary was the secure way to get more money… so we we kind of need to stick to older tech until the next open implementation people can fully control is out or we get routers you can’t even do basic settings a 2015 openwrt router just lets you change (read:screwed)… that’s the price. price for freedom… idk not a scalie havent played that game

I am not trying to say that SailfishOS (or Jolla) isnt a cool project, it just doesnt belong here. Whenever people post Obsidian.md in here I say the same thing for the same reason. Try posting in the Linux phones community. I don’t subscribe to this community to see proprietary software invade the FOSS space.

AOSP is open source, Google’s Certified Android is not. You can contest that if you want.

That doesn’t change that SailfishOS is straight up proprietary for most of its developed compotents. It does not belong in this community. The Wikipedia page for SailfishOS says under license “proprietary with some open source components”.
