When I created a new account last year, I could use an alias at first. But then I couldn’t invite people to projects because of some security concerns because of the alias. In the end, after talking to their tech service, I used a real email address. Really annoying :(
They shadow ban you for it. AFAIK it’s not documented anywhere, heard from support after noticing a single PR I opened missing (I didn’t use GitHub outside work).

Yes exactly, I had to really convince the tech support that I’m a regular human without dubious interest to get the shadow ban lifted…
