what I did yesterday:

  • woke up, consumed 200mg caffeine to not pass out immediately
  • took the prescribed max dosage of antidepressants
  • went to uni, cried
  • went home, cried
  • took my ‘emergency’ antianxiety pill
  • went to work, cried so hard I got sent home after an hour
  • went home again, cried
  • took 2 (different) antianxiety pills
  • went to bed, couldn’t sleep, took melatonin every 30 minutes till I passed out at 5pm

I’m saying this because I care about people, not because I’m trying to be smart. I know nothing about medicine.

For you to say “took melatonin every 30min” I would assume that’s at least 3 doses, because most people would say this in a different way of it were only two. So that’s dose one - half an hour - dose two - half an hour - dose three - fall asleep. So the latest you could have gone to bed is 4pm.

Before 4pm you’ve been to uni, then home, then work, then home. I’d assume a 15 min commute to work and might as well say the same for uni - that’s an hour spent commuting.

Let’s say your uni class started at 8am though (even though it’s conceivable it could have started as late as 1pm), it’s not unreasonable to assume getting up at 6:30am to get ready. 200mg of caffeine taken at 7am would be on average 100mg of caffeine still in your system by midday, and 50mg still there by 5pm. An average espresso has around 60mg+/- of caffeine in it.

If you’re going to bed at 4pm with the equivalent of an espresso’s worth of caffeine still in your system - very many coffee lovers who take an active interest in their own body rhythms will tell you that having an espresso before trying to sleep messes with their ability to sleep and/or the quality of their sleep. People who take caffeine intake particularly seriously (of whom I am not one of them) will often be heard claiming that they avoid all coffee at least eight hours before bed time, because they notice the difference in their sleep and their mood if they break that rule.

I’m sure you know this, having been given a prescription but mixing high doses of caffeine with antidepressants increases jitteryness and anxiety in the user.

I’m assuming this is why you’ve prefaced your post with the “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure” style meme and that you’re taking the piss out of yourself for taking all these drugs on purpose. You’re literally listing the most ridiculous things to do with all of these substances.

And if you don’t know this, and the meme and everything else is all naive, and you’re struggling to cope and are crying and sad and feel like you’re in a spiral then please - understand that I’m not trying to make you feel bad or patronise you. If you genuinely do need these meds, then you have to moderate how you use them. I can’t give you medical advice on how to do that but what you’re doing is not sustainable.

It’s very rare that I comment online so if I’ve missed the tone of your post completely then I apologise for interfering, but it makes me sad to see someone so young fucking around with all these meds because I am particularly sceptical about them, and favour a more nature based approach to mental wellbeing.

For context, I am one of the worst people I know when it comes to looking after themselves /properly/.

fwiw i’ve been using both caffeine and melatonin for a while and it has completely fixed my sleep issues just like how glasses fix vision problems, so it’s definitely possible to benefit enormously from those drugs.

I prefer ““natural”” treatments as well, but given how ludicrously effective these drugs have been for me i’d recommend OP start by just tweaking how they take them.
Either halve the caffeine dose or set an alarm to take it several hours earlier, and stop spreading out the melatonin. It takes like 30 minutes for melatonin to kick in so spreading it out like that kinda just means you’ll fall asleep 2 hours later than you could be.

Then if that doesn’t help then maybe the caffeine and melatonin just aren’t suitable, and it’s time to explore other options.

Also, and this applies to everyone: If you have trouble breathing through your nose, try saline spray.
It can be had as literally pure salt water and for me it’s just as effective as fancy prescription decongestant spray, and using it is probably also a big part of why i can actually sleep normally now.
There’s a recent british study with 14’000 participants that showed it (well, it might have been full on washing your nose with salt water, but same difference i think?) can straight up decrease antibiotic usage, shit’s wild.

      This person coffees.

As a personal anecdote, I’ve had tight deadlines with way too much caffeine and way to little sleep a few times in my life, and they all fucked me up.

Now, if I’m burning the candle at both ends, I’ll limit my caffeine to 2-300mg spread over a day, and stop at least 6h before sleeping. Much less fucked up. The world does not get better if you suffer for no reason, and you always would have needed just 3 more days.
