The rules limiting “mature-natured” jokes have been lifted after the general consensus of feedback was in favor of more openness. Thank you all for taking part of the discussion. I am always open to suggestions on how to improve the community as it develops.

On a personal note, as fall sets in for me, I realize I haven’t had a single mosquito in my backyard all summer.

Apparently they were all married.

Is this still because of the married couple tweet joke?

Orientation != mature, since kids can have any combination of parents/guardians.

IMO the guideline should be cheesy pun that would make someone’s kid of any age groan and shake their head, whereas, like others said, “uncle jokes” take a second more thought and are usually based on sexual (bodily and/or “action based”) themes. Maturity level isn’t so much the issue as is the difference between obvious wordplay and double entendres. It doesn’t need to be a stone-set line, but the genres are definitely distinct.

I always think it’s a shame when uncle jokes seep into dad jokes. They are not the same. I wouldn’t tell my under-10yo kids an uncle joke. I would tell them a dad joke. I would tell my teenage nephews and nieces an uncle joke. Uncle jokes should be in an uncle jokes community e.g. !unclejokes@lemmy.world

It’ll be a shame if this community changes into smut - we get enough of that elsewhere, it’s nice to have a place for clean jokes. But I guess I’m in the minority.

To me, dad jokes and uncle jokes are not just different because of themes, but for the “type” of punchline.

If a joke is about sex, but it’s a pun or otherwise groan-inducing, to me it’s still a dad joke.

When the punchline itself becomes “hehe sex”, that’s when it crosses into uncle joke territory.

I’m going to watch a bit, but if this turns into just a dirty joke central … 🤷‍♀️ … that’s not what I joined the group for.

Oh shoot, I thought Uncle Jokes could handle the edgier jokes. I’m not going anywhere though. What about asking people to preface them with a rating letter? G or E for the mosquito joke for instance. T for the jokes a Dad could tell teens but not little kids, M for the jokes he only tells Mom

I toyed around with the idea of having tags, either using the NSFW tag for more “uncle joke” material or tagging “E” material using a text like you are saying, such Safe for Everyone [SFE]. I think for now, I’ll let the reader decide which ones they want to retell. If the posts start to include a lot of uncle jokes, I might consider some sort of tagging for posts.

I’m not, and my kids are grown so I can share all kinds with them. Also I’m not likely to miss any NSFK double entendres. But I think some people like a few places on the Internet that are adult-clever but safe to look at with their kids. And some might be less likely to realize the implications of a joke that might make it NSFW, either through language issues or their own innocence. Just as most English-first people today don’t realize “hoist on his own petard” was another of Shakespeare’s many fart jokes. So few in fact that it’s now completely appropriate anywhere.

I’m not offended by mature humour. I just liked this a resource of kid-friendly jokes. If it stops being that, there’s a million other sources of adult-oriented humour.

Not offended, I know well enough that people most often than not don’t mean to offend, they are just having fun.

I liked this place because it focused on silly puns. The world needs more silliness.

        Let’s see how this goes.
