Mullvad donated some money to a Neo-N@zi party. To me, umless if they keep doing this, it doesn’t feel too important, as long as they keep their products up and going. What does it mean to you? Your opinion could change my mind

Mullvad didn’t donate money. One of their founders donated some of his private money to this loonie party. Money that may have come in full but in all likelihood really only in part from the payments he received from Mullvad. But it wasn’t a company decision to give them money.

Now, Mullvad, the company, in my opinion reacted poorly to this. It’s not so much the donation but the company’s reaction to the affair that would’ve been enough for me to switch VPN providers. I wouldn’t hold them responsible for the decisions one of their leaders made in his private life. But this “all politics are okay for us” PR response was the wrong reaction for me.

The party is better described as a horseshoe party. They present a mix of politics that’s mostly very left leaning except for their views on immigration where they turned hard the other way. Calling them Nazis is using the term a bit inflationarily. The real Nazis in Sweden are the Sweden Democrats and they are already in parliament.

The far-right generally take popular talking points from the left. That’s what the fascists and the nazis did. That’s the whole reason why the nazis called themselves “national socialists”, despite being ultra-capitalist and not socialist at all. Socialism being popular again means the far-right can (once again) take leftist talking points to appeal to the sense of disenfranchisement produced by capitalism. Even Trump used some leftist arguments here and there in his campaigns. We can argue all you want that Trump (just like these losers) would never do anything to benefit workers, but my point here is that we can’t just judge a party’s left-right alignment based on simple rhetoric, we need to judge them based on their broader context, broader platform, and on who’s actually backing it. To consider them leftist based on empty rhetoric would force you to conclude Hitler was also “very left leaning except for their views on” ethnic cleansing. Come on lol.

Yeah, except for that last bit… That’s Nazi enough for me to annull whatever leftwing airs they put on. Also, that “horseshoe” theory of politics is a centrist fantasy.
