So uh… something weird happened… I asked it to take an xray of my hand and it… returned this image…

Which is clearly wrong. It must be the reason why everyone says it generates low quality slop… right? Haha… ha…

        An instance of Poe’s law.

And in full disclosure, I had actually forgotten the name of that and had to look it up, which from an outside perspective might also look like an instance of it.

I always get that and Cunningham’s mixed up. But the good news is it always looks like an intentional use of Cunningham’s Law if I do.

Lol, I’m from a country with healthcare so I just go to the doctor and my X-ray is free. Parking is also redeemable because of my job!

Jokes aside, as much as I hate AI slop this could actually be a freaking awesome use for pattern recognition that might actually improve healthcare.

But, I’m a US American so for us it costs a stupid amount of money to GET the X-Ray after waiting for an appointment, and then you play one-way phone tag waiting another month(s) for the analysis of the x-ray.

(Bonus points if you wait 6 months and pay $150-whatever for “I dunno looks fine to me.”)

I dunno in a functioning society with a decent doctor:patient ratio (is there such a thing?) maybe this wouldn’t be necessary, but over here for most things we’re practically on our own anyway so the more DIY options the better.

Shout-out to urgent cares though. If you actually broke something they usually get you scanned and remedied pretty fast. I had a thoroughly good ouch-I-think-my-toe-broke (it did) experience with urgent care.

Yeah AI (not necessarily LLMs though) have been used to great effect for medical uses like that. It’s a shame how most of the good work coming out of the AI/ML field gets overshadowed by LLMs

      Global problem probably.

Here in Eastern Europe if you have the money you go to private clinics and for the most part you will get the care you need but even in paid ones the good doctors have pretty long wait times. And you’re paying ~100 eur for 1 consultation.

What country? I got a lung xray the same week I was admitted into the hospital and it was all in a public and free hospital.

In Romania at least I’ve never had to wait for an x-ray or the like on the public system; the health system has a lot of problems but that’s not one of them.

The hospital buildings might look like they’ve just been demilitarised, the ward won’t have AC, it’ll be 50c, and you’ll be sharing it with a drug addict who spends all night pacing up and down the ward smoking cigarettes - but you’ll wait less time for (and they won’t hesitate to call for) an X-Ray or MRI or whatever than you would in the UK on the NHS.

The last three times myself or a family member have been to the emergency room in the US it’s taken hours to be seen. And we have enormous medical bills and insurance premiums on top of that.

Someone needs to tell me how a quote and a scare quote differ and what the point of the latter term is

Scare quotes are used derogatorily. They can often be preceded with the term “so-called”. Like so-called “doctors” will rip you off with their so-called “x-rays”, when ChatGPT will do it for free.

When spoken aloud, scare quotes are indicated by the speaker making bouncing bunny ears with their middle and forefingers.

That makes sense, but I think some people misuse that term and just think it’s a fun way to say quotes.

Hmmm, I haven’t noticed the term being misused frequently. It wasn’t in this case; chunes correctly identified the scare quotes in the OP

Yes. I believe I’ve seen some people say “scare quotes” to refer to actual quotations which are highlighted specifically because they are alarming. Which is understandable, I guess.

Ok, if anyone actually breaks their hand, take a picture and do this, cause it would be pretty funny if they make an X-ray that actually looks busted.

I think it probably would identify a break when you provide the x ray to it.

What I want to see is if you take a normal picture of a broken arm or hand or finger or whatever and ask it for an x ray, if it’s fake x-ray image it gives you will show a broken bone.

Claude helped me walk me through finding & installing the 3D-Slicer software on my Linux workstation, and a crash course in how to use it to find various interesting bits of my internal anatomy, which was great fun for playing with the CT-scan data I came home with after abdominal surgery.

It was also pretty helpful at turning medicalese jargon - in the various medical test and report files I accumulated between admission in ER and discharge a few days later - into understandable English. Which was actually pretty cool and reduced my stress levels markedly (that and the opiate pump.)

Asking an AI to diagnose you from a photo is obviously idiotic. It doesn’t mean they’re useless though; it just means that evidently AI won’t cure stupid.
