@OP Am I misunderstanding? Aren’t the linked pics meant to show MtF mammary expression? I’m not seeing any.

Happy to be told I’m just blind w/ a red circle

Cis men can lactate too, all humans and practically all mammals have breast tissue and mammary glands which do occasionally get triggered and just start producing. In that situation I’d call you an example of nature not a freak of nature.

just psa, if you lactate w/o much stimulation, and have a testosterone-dominant body, it might be worth to check out the doctor

but i presume you already did, if that were the case

Even new born (nursing) babies can lactate.

Transphobes have an absolutely shitty understanding of biology and are over confident about it because they don’t even realize how much they don’t know.

Edit: But here you go, hope catbox is allowed by your government:

I also want to add that it is on the populace of your country to keep your web access free. UK and Australia are really bad regarding this, but seemingly the populace did not care enough to really fight it.

Cis men can lactate. Did everyone forget about the man who nursed his sun after the wife passed in labor.

Even birthing mothers often cannot produce milk within hours of birth. Many produce colostrum but it often takes many hours/days for even that to come in.

I’ve never heard of that story but it definitely was not necessary beyond the skin-to-skin benefits.

Cis men can lactate and get ductal breast cancer, which is cancer of the milk ducts.

Its just much much rarer than cis women.

I agree with you completely, but I’d just like to say that it’s generally rarer than in all women. The risks of this type of cancer in cis and trans women are comparable.
Sure, with smaller lifelong estradiol exposure, the risk may not be exactly equal, but it’s up there. Having boobs increases risk of breast cancer, surprise.

Lifelong estradiol exposure at the level and ages trans women take it for HRT might actually increase trans women’s risk over the baseline of 12% for cis women. If we would take trans health care seriously we might be able to find out for sure.

Few studies have examined the breast cancer risk in transgender women. The most robust evidence to date is from a Dutch study in 2019, which found that breast cancer was more common in trans women (average age was 31) who undergo hormone treatment than cis men, but less common than in cis women.

But also this is the only study of its kind that has even been done and they found the exposure to hormones increase the risk during that exposure and the cancer characteristics of the breast cancer resembled a more female pattern. The more major conclusion for this is we cannot treat trans women’s breast cancer prevention the same way we treat cis women (average age was 31, for cis women this is ~61–62 years old), but we need to first take ANY trans healthcare seriously to follow up on this.

EDIT also to all my friends who have breasts, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. What better thread to hijack about this than a boobie thread. If can remember the game the Oregon trail, you should get a mammogram. If you have ever walked in to a Blockbuster, you should get a mammogram. If you can hear the teacher calling his name in your head in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, you should get a mammogram. If you can’t get a mammogram due to your age, you should learn how to do a self check and do these once a month.

I don’t really have anything of my own to add. The studies are there (thanks, @stopforgettingit@lemmy.world!) for anyone interested in reading up. I just wanted to say that every person with breasts should do regular self-checks. Breast cancer is no joke and it’s a real tragedy.
Fuck, I should really learn how to do them…

RIP to my right boob for sure.

But yes, I agree you should learn how to do a self check and also do about once a month in the shower. About half of the women in my support group found their cancer from self exams.

Its pretty quick less than a min for both, you raise one arm then starting at the nipple you will press fingers in to the breast. Then press the tissue in about 1 inch apart spacing and move in a circular direction around the nipple and increasing the circles outward to the armpit. Make sure you get all the way in to your armpit too.

You are looking for anything that feels texturally different, it could be a divet or indent or it could be a lump or bump. In my case it was wide and flat and just a bit harder than the tissue around it and it was on the far right side of my right breast, almost under the armpit.

Emphasis on can. It’s rare since men have way less breast tissue (and, by extension, a much lower chance for breast cancer) and underdeveloped milk ducts. Not saying it can’t happen, just that it’s not usually the case.

Also, why do you feel the need to defend cis men’s ability to lactate? That seems…odd, to be honest

How do people not know estrogen makes boobs? 😭 /s

I totally get it. This isn’t something the average person has to worry about in the slightest, so I get that it might be a shock or news to them.

Just know that sex hormones, like during puberty, have certain effects on people’s bodies. And for the most part, those effects manifest when trans people take HRT later in life, post puberty.
Mainly breast growth, skin and fat changes on estrogen and facial hair growth, body hair growth, muscle mass increase and also fat changes for testosterone.

Who asked me about this? Nobody. I’m really sorry, this is my hyperfixation 😭

I didn’t mean that in a “why would you tell me this?!?” way, truly in a “I never thought about that, that is neat!” Way

I just simply never thought about it

Also Catholic school made me think milk came from pregnancy. It wasn’t a great education.

          Also, another fun fact;

All people have estrogen and testosterone. The rates just differ (and there’s variation too in what that affects more).

Puberty is triggered by a certain amount of fat reserves being present, due to estrogen and testosterone being made from cholesterol.

If estrogen dominates, fat is burnt slower, breasts develop and hips get wider, while hair is preserved and doesn’t grow thicker.

With testosterone dominance, more body hair develops (but for some, head hair may fall out later), the vocal cords descend, and the body generally burns fat more quickly in exchange for more (visible) muscle.

Some people have it inbetween, whether through HRT or naturally (eg. some intersex people). Same with body parts.
