Stop using Discord. If you’re choosing Discord over a good Matrix client like Sable because of minor frictions, your choosing your own convenience over the lives of other people.
Making the change is isn’t some huge lifestyle transition. It’s just using a decentralised method to achieve the exact same thing.
I’d rather stick with vesktop thanks
Does PTT work on vesktop? Because I cannot make it work there
No idea, I just don’t wanna touch the unmodified version cause it’s got so much spyware and unwanted features, which vesktop let’s me turn some of those off
Wow. Amazing! I use it in a browser when I need it then close the tab when I don’t, you know, like a reasonable person? I am not installing more Chromium to not only spy on me but literally also tell everyone what I am doing unless I go out of my way to opt out (the toggle will just turn back on whenever it feels like it).
I bet they did some dumb shit like subscribe every single QWERTY 101 key.
Vesktop
I can’t imagine the venn diagram of people who still use discord and people who game on linux has that much of an overlap does it? Like cmon it’s got to be the worst possible of all the options. You’d be more secure sending a plaintext email to someone.
Most gaming communities are on Discord. I game on Linux, and we don’t use Discord in my friend group, but I am still in tens Discord servers. I don’t get to choose where these communities are. There are even several non-gaming-relating communities I am part of that primarily exist on Discord.
The thing is that everyone else is on discord. So you dont have a choice
I mean you do. I don’t use it. If someone wants to use it I say I don’t have it and make them use something else.
Most of my friends discord is my only way of communication lol
I also organize tournaments for a small community sometimes and I’m not getting all those people to install something else that does the same job but probably worse.
This works only if you do not have many internet friends. I also really don’t have an issue with discord usability wise and their ultimate implementation of age verification is practical even if I disagree with doing it at all (but it seems to be politically popular sadly).
Good for you, but you see, other people are what’s known as “not an asshole”
How is refusing to install spyware on my computer being an asshole? You must be young. You’ll get to an age where you realize having principles and sticking to them makes life a lot more bearable than being a pushover.
Dog whatever. This is pretentious as fuck. I’m 34 years old so not exactly young but I have dozens of IRL friends in a few different parts of the country that the only way I keep in touch with them is via one discord server. I’m not about to just abandon friendships over a line in the sand like this. It’s not as easy as people make it out to be to just get them all to switch to matrix. There’s also a lot of “friends of friends” in there so it’d be extra cumbersome to get people to switch. And plenty of them are not exactly technical inclined about using computers, etc.
Do you people not have phone numbers?
I just looked and there’s 86 members in the discord. The channels we have are vidya games, music, TV & anime, IRL happenings, fishing, creative endeavors & self released music, news around the world, specs / PC tech posting, food, sports, I think you see where I’m goin with this. It’s very active, and a 86 member group chat sounds absolutely miserable. I have discord notifications turned off, I log in every once in a while as I don’t even have social media any more.
If someone likes anime and doesn’t like sports, they can tune out of those conversations all together v easily by muting a channel
Like it or not discord fulfills a niche that goes beyond texting or social media, which I think fills the role a million times worse as it’s just posting updates for some likes and random ass comments compared to conversations
“people who still use Discord” is virtually everyone in my experience
Maybe among gamers? I don’t think it’s all that ubiquitous outside of that.
Even buisnesses use it as alternative to Teams lol
I’m one of them lol. Hate discord but there is no choice if i wanna play with friends.
Are these friends who you know well? If so why can your entire friend group not move to a different solution together? Do they refuse to?
Discord is unfortunately still wildly popular, even amongst Linux users
The overlap in the venn diagram is far from a circle, but it’s bigger than you’d think
Wow, I can’t wait to never install it
How do you even release a voice chat app without push-to-talk capability?
I’m not sure why I’d be installing actual Discord on Linux; I’m sure there should be an open-source fork somewhere that’s less resource-hungry and less intrusive to the system… Just saying.
“fork” implies there’s code to fork
Nobody wants to use it, but if all your friends use it and you want to talk to them, you kinda have to
I moved my community to stoat. Early development so it’s quite jank as fuck, but so was discord when it was new.
Stoat has had plenty of time to fix those bugs but rather would focus on nonsense that nobody needs
Wouldn’t want that malware on my machine. So sick of every online community default to the shithole that is Discord.
Discord is rolling out global…
Goddamnit, what bullshit are they doing now?!?!
shortcut support (e.g. Push to Talk) on Wayland for Linux users
Oh… Well we got good news for once
I’m so confused. I am on KDE Wayland and have been using push to talk for like a year now. What even is this?
The ability to use push to talk while Discord is not the focused window.
I know, it’s been working
Through an x.org passthrough hack, now it works without opening up the ability to be keylogged by the client.
It had been working for me until it somehow didn’t. Not quite sure why. I did had to setup KDE to allow global shortcuts for Discord but that no longer seems to be working for me.
Still please don’t use it to host your source code. Or to communicate critical info.
Been waiting for this for a long time.
Oh my god. Push to talk.
:o
Holy fuck.
Linux didn’t have the most basic voice chat function up to now??? :O
They STILL don’t???
What the actual
Checks original release date for ventrilo
It was an issue with Wayland. Before that we had X11, where global shortcuts wasn’t an issue.
Apple phones used to have headphone jacks, removable batteries, and expandable memory.
How is this relevant to our discussion?
They lost everything, you lost the shortcuts to everything
We didn’t lost shortcuts to everything. It’s only about global shortcuts, all other still work. And given the Wayland global shortcuts are now functional and officially supported, its not the same situation anymore. The difference to iPhones is, that you cannot do anything about it on iPhone. On Wayland however desktops environments such as KDE, GNOME and Hyperland could implement a custom variant (or the draft version of the portal) and have it functional; it was just not a standard.
So no, the situation is not entirely comparable. We are not at mercy by one single company.
Ahhh, blame it on Wayland. I see how it is.
You know that the Wayland portal for global shortcuts took 10 years discussions before they finally settled in, right? Off course it is to blame the Wayland devs (those responsible for this portal), not Discord.
Meh, I already have a global mute shortcut. I have a keyboard shortcut for this script I found somewhere that toggles mic audio capture in ALSA.
mic_on=$(amixer get Capture | grep '\[on\]')if [ "$mic_on" = "" ] ; thenamixer set Capture toggle && paplay /usr/share/sounds/ocean/stereo/device-added.ogaelseamixer set Capture toggle && paplay /usr/share/sounds/ocean/stereo/device-removed.ogafiThis will mute all applications. While a workaround for your setup, on other use cases it wouldn’t work if the user wants to mute a specific application only.
I am quite curious what the mechanism for that will be
XDG Global shortcuts portal? Has existed and been supported by plasma and gnome for a while https://flatpak.github.io/xdg-desktop-portal/docs/doc-org.freedesktop.portal.GlobalShortcuts.html
Hyperland also did that if I’m right. They supported an alpha version of the global shortcuts. Nobody knew if this is the final form or not. Global shortcuts are official since 1 month or so, see https://github.com/flatpak/xdg-desktop-portal/issues/2142 and https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/merge_requests/525
