Im fine with reposts, even reposts without credit. But reposting a meme from one lemmy community to another lemmy community a day after the original and not crediting/cross-posting is just shitty and pointless. Sharing a meme to another platform is the digital version of telling a joke, sharing it to the same platform is the digital version of saying someone else’s joke louder.
Thank you cm0002 for trying to keep this place lively.
Yeah, In not surprised.
cm0002 is known for doing this constantly.
I guess you didn’t catch why they do this, eh?
It’s for the karma … right?
I, and I think many others, have .ml blocked, so fair call, I reckon. That said, my life would be affected not at all if I missed a meme or few.
If you knew that, it would have been helpful to share that information rather than make a joke about it. I spent the time between my reply to you and now trying to actually find the account in question and still haven’t.
I’m sorry, I assumed you had it handy because of your screenshot. I can’t tell which account made the post in your screenshot because it doesn’t give the instance. Just search the username and pick a version, they should all contain the info.
I made the joke because one of the reasons he does this is to draw attention to his stance.
What screenshot?
I’m not OP.
The screenshot in the OP doesn’t display which instance that particular cm0002 account is using.
This is just the person doing the digital individual version of Claude/ChatGPT/Gemini/Anthropic, etc.
I’ve seen the user in question accused of actually being one of them. Didn’t bother checking in later to see how that went, tho.
May as well be, if not.
I’m just waiting for the 33 non-banned cm0002 users to start reposting their own content.
I understand your frustration. It feels like stealing in a way, and a crosspost is a clean and neat way to share a post in a different community.
That being said, I don’t see it as a huge issue. Even setting aside that this particular user has a reason for doing that (which you might agree with or not), Lemmy is not that big that a few reposts feel like a problem, and having more activity is nice.
I like how the screenshots omit the instance, giving the false impression that it’s a repost to the same community instead of the reality that it’s a crosspost to the corresponding community on a different instance.
not crediting/cross-posting is just shitty and pointless.
There is a point though: If cm0002 uses the cross-posting feature, it’ll show the post’s original instance. That might drive traffic to the original instance, which cm0002 does not want. Because cm0002 is on a one-man mission to starve certain instances to death.
Fuck that guy for a multitude of reasons.
I’m sure you got approval to use those photos from the source, right?
… wait, did you STEAL THOSE PHOTOS… and on top of that, refuse to GIVE CREDIT FOR THOSE PHOTOS?
Oh dear God, I’m going to be sick
I’m from the era of the internet where caring about crediting people for fucking memes of all things was treated as unserious as it is.
Man, copyright has broken people’s brains.
I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I am kinda ok with cm0002 reposting content (at this time). I don’t think Lemmy is big enough yet to start throttling ourselves over situations like this - where the content is good, but doesn’t receive as many views. While yes, “my karma”; but at the same time, if people aren’t cross-posting / reposting, it’ll appear like there’s even less content and lemmy will seem more dead
Yes - I am also a hypocrite and would hate it if someone reposted my content without crediting me. But in the grand scheme of things, I’d rather Lemmy have more posts and look more alive, than keeping things stale because “XYZ was already posted”
Once Lemmy get big enough that reposts become a problem and are seen multiple times in the same day - then I think we can bring back this level of moderation
I’ll second your unpopular opinion. With how fractured the fediverse is, there’s large swaths of users that will only see 1 of the memes in the OP screenshot. I’d rather we err on the side of more content than less, particularly for things like memes that have been posted and reposted so many times already.
They’ve also been pretty open about doing it to take traffic away from ML, which is a noble thing to do in my opinion.
