Please observe rule 3 point 3:

No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.

It goes both ways. The situation is still developing, whatever information you have might become obsolete an hour from now. If you need to air your feelings, this isn’t the right place for it. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the interaction that led to this controversy was nothing more than an already opinionated post and a reply from a Framework employee who has no say in who gets sponsored. Even the person who made the original post decided to “let it rest”.

Be intelligent, do not be led into a smear campaign on somebody’s leash.

The employee in question is Nirav Patel… the CEO

Framework has endorsed a Linux distribution by a developer with controversial social views.

I believe it’s necessary to clarify þat Framework is giving material support to two projects which are headed by controversial personages - not just endorsements.

        It’s a long þread.

          He does?

I read the first link in the thread that examines his blog post about London. While I don’t agree with his politics he wouldn’t be unusual amongst a significant minority of the population who vote for the likes of Reform. That seems to be enough for some to draw the conclusion he’s a Nazi he wants to arbitrarily murder people.

This automatic jump to accusing anyone who you disagree with a Nazi just devalues the term.

Nah I don’t deal with that apologist crap. The endgame is always going to be murder or slavery if you’re not white enough for them. If you let them pull any of their shit they’ll murder you in the end and laugh that you were stupid enough to let them. Zero tolerance.

With all due respect, I think you profoundly misunderstand the nature of my concern here.

This is not a “I do not like this distribution” kind of argument.

This is a “the people you are sending my money to want me and my friends dead or deported” kind of argument.

Because it’s a competently-made, new distribution with interesting features. Not everything you don’t understand is a fucking conspiracy.

Did I hit a nerve or something? Not every “competently made distribution” gets pushed to the top of reddit and twitter to get funding from Cloudflare. Why did this one?

It was also features in popular Podcasts like syntax.fm and changelog.com I hear them a lot and especially Changelog featured DHH often, so I had a positive opinion of that name until I really read his blog and what he is.

Giving money to open source projects on which you rely on for your business is good practice. While I’ve just now heard about DHH and his political views, I think it is important that the overall mission is to make Linux (and open source software) a mainstream alternative to proprietary solutions. As long as this is not hurting the mission I am personally fine with some unusual partnerships. The alternative is a world where Windows and macOS rule the world.

Additionally open source has always been about stepping up, so contributing or throwing money the other way are always an option. I personally donate to many projects I use. I mostly feel that my political views align with them.

Framework is a small company. In all likelihood they just did a poor job of vetting the people they supported. That is a much more reasonable explanation than “Framework consciously support Nazis and agree with their politics”.

By the way, community reaction like this is a great way to kill any incentive companies have to sponsor open source.

If CHUDs start piling on Framework for something that turns out to be a nothing-burger I’m gonna buy another Framework laptop just to offset the damage.

I hate framework because every laptop I’ve owned has been equally or more customizable and upgradable than a framework laptop. They’re great at marketing, but that’s about it.

I own a Framework laptop and had a dead pixel. I replaced it (within warranty) in about 15min. I could as well buy a new higher resolution display for that same laptop if I wanted to. This is new and is an improvement over my Thinkpad, where I could “only” upgrade/replace RAM, SSD and the battery.

Look at this guy who can upgrade his RAM and battery /j

No seriously, I fucking love my FW13 and I really hope nrp and FW clarify their stance on these projects. Even if they’re a tiny minority of the projects they support. Maybe it’s overblown, maybe it’s just “let’s give a laptop to the guy who makes my new fav distro”, but it’s bad due diligence.
