  • This YouTube video is clearly done by someone who’s both never worked in schools, and never been at a level that meant you had to deal with budgets. Schools are purchasing less Chromebooks because funding for them dried up in most cases. During the pandemic a rush of federal and state funds kicked in and companies like CDW literally 10x their CB sales over night. Beyond that a ton of schools invested HEAVILY in technology and apps over the pandemic. Now that 99% of classrooms are back in person that spending has gone towards facility and in classroom tech upgrades which Chromebooks and Google apps aren’t part of. Beyond that a lot of schools during the pandemic had facilities they realized needed upgrading. Any leftover state and federal funds from those have been getting shifted. ESSR funds are a great showcase of this. Early ESSR 1 and 2 funds went towards CBs, Zoom/Meet licenses, and other cloud based solutions. ESSR 3 funds are being shifted towards facility upgrades and repairs. Beyond that schoology/Canvas/Blackboard aren’t really GSuite or even classroom competitors. Hell in most districts I’ve worked in we had two or three of them at the same time. While Google isn’t as talked about right now it’s not like it’s going away. Schools just aren’t reliant on cloud based solutions ATM. I suspect (and am already hearing it from clients) that in 2024 lots of districts will have ballot initiatives to increase taxes for local schools to fix facilities, but new textbooks, and replace existing and aging in classroom tech. Google doesn’t offer any of those.


  • It’s basically the dot com bubble all over again. These companies survived for years off free money and venture capitalists with seemingly endless pockets due to low interest rates. Now that rates are up the money is dry. Now that investors don’t have free money they want to see a return. Since these companies never could be profitable they’re now collapsing under their own weight.

    As for who was wanting to shut it down… basically any government agency dealing in child abductions, any mom group, “family” organization, incels/people mad at others for just being social. Just my guess.


  • Yup, it’s part of why the idea of rescuing them was never going to happen either. There’s only something like 3 subs in the world that can dive to that depth and they weren’t close enough nor built for rescue missions. Even if they were alive they only had 3 days worth of oxygen. Honestly they’re lucky that the “sub” just imploded rather than dealing with the slow loss of oxygen.

    • The US military heard it and didn’t necessarily want to give away capability of listening devices around the sea floor.

    • The sub was difficult to get to the debris field because it was at an incredibly deep section that few craft are capable of reaching safely.

    It was frustrating they made a big deal about something we ultimately could have done nothing about in the first place. However it’s not like the whole “hearing the implosion” thing was something the military wanted to give away and at that depth we have to be careful. Don’t forget we’ve put more people into space than have been to the deepest point on the planet.





  • As a former larger school district sysadmin all I’m going to say is Fuccckkkkk Surface products. The repair ability of surface devices (sans Surface Laptops) is so bad it’s basically a throwaway device. We wouldn’t dare switch from ChromeOS to that, not because of the whole Microsoft problem or learning a new ecosystem but just simply because we cannot possibly in-house repair those devices and Microsoft support on surface devices is Asssssssss. I had one bad surface in my life and I spent half a work day with MS Support just to get them to send me a box to ship it in so they could repair it.



  • It’s generating content and clicks. Which is INCREDIBLY important for a social media. The content doesn’t have to be good, and obviously Lemmy isn’t the same as Reddit or other social media in terms of value of upvotes, or algorithms. However it’s important for USERS to see content that’s fresh hitting the front page. Even if it’s the same topic and shitposting. This helps attract other creators which in turn brings more users. It’s the shit circle of (social) life.
