Toxic masculinity is any overt masculinity that has a toxic outcome… So this counts.

0·4 days agoBecause if you are going to be a pedantic asshole and miss my point then so am I.
I literally mentioned code repo wikis…
Honestly though, it doesn’t seem like you have ever worked on a large project with multiple devs if that is really what you think.

0·4 days agoThere is no such thing as self documenting code. In any project the code can only ever tell half the story, the rest must be documented. Even then, I don’t always want to have to go back and figure out what each part does. There is a reason basically all code repos also have built in wikis.
There is nothing stopping you from having a birthday party on a day that isn’t your birthday. I just wouldn’t recommend then also having a party on your birthday, at least not with the same people…
What’s brown and a little sticky?
A twig.
This is how I have previously heard the joke.
Could just go with “them” or “they”.

3·8 days agoI’m not sure there is any one answer but I think I would start with education. Anti-littering campaigns haven’t ended littering but they have certainly shifted the public mindset around litter, I think distracted driving is going to need to be treated the same way.

15·9 days agoYes, but I feel like putting cameras in cars isn’t the answer. People are already finding ways to trick the computer into thinking they are paying attention:

We need far stricter enforcement, too many people treat driving like a right instead of a privilege. Even drunk driving isn’t treated as a license removing offense in a lot of places.
Its so weird to me that we live in a world where people are convinced that AI can feel pain but still refer to a cat as “it”.

22·9 days agoGM has been banned from selling user data to insurance companies in the US and Tesla has been in the news multiple times for sharing video from inside people’s cars.
This should be a forgone conclusion especially with Europe mandating cameras in cars now.

52·9 days agoI just want to throw out as the child of a lesbian couple that I disagree that talking about gay marriage is something that needs to wait until puberty. It certainly didn’t take that long for the other kids at school to notice I had two moms.
There are even kids books for explaining it, when I was a kid I had Daddy’s Roommate and Heather Has Two Mommies just as a for instance.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•The first Kamikaze pilot? No, but this often-forgotten man of history set an eerie precedent on Pearl Harbour…English
0·12 days agoNo bad, in the US it’s common, or at least was when I was in school, for middle school (5th-8th grades, 11-14 year olds ish) coaches to fill in for subjects like health or history that were already seen as easy classes. They would also do things like allow their athletes and cheerleaders to skip class and such and people wonder why the US is falling so far behind so quickly.

0·12 days agoI singled out my history coaches for a reason. Luckly later I had actual history teachers who taught fact rather than opinion. But the football coaches who had to teach 7th grade history were more than happy to talk about how everybody hates America and is jealous and is willing to give their lives just to make sure that we can’t have what we have. Basically conflating people like the Japanese in WWII with those who perpetrated 9/11 and all the rhetoric that was being thrown around in the time shortly thereafter.

0·12 days agoI had the opportunity to visit Pearl Harbor last year. It was an amazing experience and I encourage everybody who can to try to go sometime. There was an exhibit on the Missouri regarding Japanese pilots and that a kamakazi attack had been carried out on the Missouri. What I thought was most fascinating though was that they apparently weren’t required to kamakazi, they were only encouraged to do so if they were certain that it would inflict casualties. Somewhat starkly different than what I was taught by my history coaches in junior high.

5·12 days agoTo expand on what Elixir_Fan said: See the ELIZA Effect. This is not a new problem and it does indeed arise when people stop seeing the software as a tool.

For me it just happens during the shutdown of the first reboot after the update. When it comes back up on the new software it works just fine.
