While I agree the younger you go the more icky it gets, 18 as the cutoff is completely arbitrary and a 16y/o could be way more mature than an 18y/o in a ton of cases, of course there are special protections even for 16/17 (some considering bigger age gaps worse even if everything else is proper and legal)

I don’t feel I was any differently prepared to engage in sex at 16 compared to 18, if we are gonna argue that we should drive age of consent to 21y/o maybe instead. Or higher.

So “mature enough” could be untrue even for something that’s 23 years old or older, while no longer pedo after the defined pedophilia cutoff age is just a fact.

I never understood twitter (or mastodon for that matter) I spend most of the time on reddit but I comment more on Lemmy, discussion is better on Lemmy than reddit, reddit for me is more for the r4r stuff, posting to find new friends and stuff, I don’t use it for much more than that.

People in Lemmy are still people, I don’t think you got banned off of reddit for “'absolutely no reason” my guess is that you said something (doesn’t matter if the take/comment you put on reddit was or wasn’t good/proper) that pissed someone off and they banned you.

I wouldn’t venture to think Lemmy is thaaaaaat different from reddit in the sense that every single user will be reasonable, level headed and open to civil discussion on here. From what I read from other users, it is still possible to get banned “for no reason” on Lemmy too.

I’m a bit lazy to go and find it rn but I did put my own PERSONAL way of how I understand/use the term in a reply to another comment in this post, not saying I hold the stick of truth over anyone else, and im not trying to enforce any kind of action, I asked cause I like to think about things, and I thought id be better for me to listen to other people’s perspectives before “picking a side” so to speak, I have some preliminary ideas about what I think about the topic but nothing is set in stone really.

You didn’t get it wrong at all, that was the intent behind it, that not all people are healthy for a community, this wouldn’t be ALL “normies” though, but a subset of them (disruptive people), you probably have met quite a few of those in mainstream social media.

And while not all of them are “normies”, there’s been a long history of outsiders getting into geek groups and then either shaming or criticizing the hobbies of nerdy/geeky people due to “not getting it”, I do think you should exclude certain people from certain communities, like for example, not allowing child molesters and neo-nazis to hang around.
