  • When I was working on data protection issues, I asked a specialist lawyer more than two years ago how something like this could be reconciled with the GDPR. He couldn’t answer the question, but said that with the best will in the world he couldn’t imagine that this would be OK under data protection law. Nevertheless, this approach is now common practice for the vast majority of news sites in Europe and also in the EU, which has strict regulations regarding tracking, at least in theory. I still don’t know the legal details, but at least I know that there are no serious penalties whatsoever if there is no distortion of competition involved - and since none of the news companies would sue another in this matter, this has become common practice even in the EU.

Me too. I just don’t understand why so many people think that these “ok boomer / millennials, gen x,y,z does this and that” things don’t work on the same principle tho. I think it’s just as stupidly stereotypical…and I’m not even a boomer.

That unfunny, creatively bankrupt, so-called “AI” bullshit is just sad, man.

Sorry, mate, just had to take that opportunity. But seriously: You are of course absolutely right. I won’t post any more AI-generated Pics to this community/magazine/whatever. I just thought since there are so many reposts from other plattforms I’ll try something new that is somewhat OC to Lemmy and that I have the time for. So, sorry about the AI stuff. I just wanted to contribute something with very limited time. Won’t do it again in this community.

  • I don’t understand why this whole generation concept is so popular these days. I don’t think it helps anyone if it’s just used for sensationalistic general statements that pit one group against the other. This is the same unthinking logic that racism operates on. I cannot see that this way of thinking would in any way help to find solutions to the real problems or even to identify the actors who are responsible for today’s ills. On the contrary, it only helps irresponsible profiteers to continue their greed for profit at the expense of the general public by placing the blame on an anonymous group rather than on the individuals who are actually responsible.

  • Google’s ReCaptcha in version 3 works in the background. Instead of displaying images of crosswalks and such, it uses a kind of risk score. This risk score is based on user behavior: If someone has behaved like a human in the past and thus gets a low risk score, the captcha is passed without you having to do anything or even seeing it.

I assume that Google uses data from it’s own services, web analytics applications and usage data from Andoird devices and Chrome for this. Of course, this is not without its privacy issues but it’s convenient.
