You can’t play on most multiplayer servers, but if you host your own, you can turn off online-mode in the server.properties file, which just skips authentication stuff

That shouldn’t stop people who already have it from playing. The old versions are still available and there is a lot of fun to be had with modpacks

Isn’t that just what’s known as cracked minecraft, I remember playing that around 2012 and only being able to play on some servers

Yeah, modded or old versions on Java are basically the same as they used to be
