The “Taco Bell makes you sick” comes from an e.coli and salmonella outbreak in the early 2000’s (2004?). It was bad enough and widespread enough to cement the idea into the public consciousness for 20+ years.
I heard a theory that the reason it persists is because there are people out there who get practically no fiber in their diets, and eating some beans at Taco Bell is enough to shock their systems.
There’s also the “I ordered half the entire menu, ate it all with 20 packets of fire sauce and a gallon and a half of mountain dew. It’s totally Taco Bell’s fault that my stomach is having issues.” brand of super genius.
I dunno if it was “bad enough,” or if late night hosts and shit thought “lol Taco Bell gives you diarrhea” was good enough to joke about for 2+ decades (hint: it’s not)
Taco Bell’s biggest issue, I think, was that its outbreak happened during the Internet era. Jack In The Box’s outbreak literally killed people, but it happened in the early nineties, so it eventually faded from memory.
But they still use super low grade meat, and probably cut corners on a bunch of other things too. Which I’m sure other fast food restaurants do too, but still. Throw in a bunch of hot sauce and you’ll have digestion issues.

Like when Jack and the Box used kangaroo and horse meat in their burgers?
