So I downloaded 3 different versions of John Wick 4 at this point… 4k h265 from PsO, the same from CONTiNENTAL and the 1080p from CONTiNENTAL.

I even tried “optimizing” it for TV via Plex…

It just doesn’t play on my TV… On my PC via Plex Web it does play but no matter what I do, it doesn’t on my TV. Everything else plays perfectly fine.

I have the Samsung S95B and I know it doesn’t support DoVi, but other titles that have DoVi do play and just use HDR10 if that’s available.

The 1080p CONTiNENTAL doesn’t have any HDR and doesn’t play either.

What am I missing?

EDIT: I found out that the AC3 audio codec is broken for me with the german language. It shows as AC3 Stereo and doesn’t work. But the AC3 5.1 in english does work flawless…i need to find out how to change the audio codec of the german track for eAC3 or DAC for example.

Is it giving you any kind of on-screen message? What about the logs? Is this Direct Play or Transcoding?

I know some players don’t handle HDR very well, but that’s usually related to bad tonemapping.

Nope, no on-screen message. it just stays black and that’s it…

i tried direct-play and also tried hardware transcoding by just chosing for example 1080p; this for example works buttery smooth when i watch it on my PC or my tablet. I have a GTX1660 in that server that does hardware transcoding perfectly fine.

The 1080p version i loaded doesn’t have HDR and doesn’t work either. Also i can watch HDR content on that TV no problemo. For example John Wick 3 has the exact same video and audio codec and has DoVi HDR aswell. Plex on my TV (native app on samsung) uses HDR10 then without any hickup and flawless playback.

Regarding logs… tbh i am not really good with the logs of plex. My docker container doesn’t really show me anything besides that it started up properly. Where would i find the logs you ask for?

yes transcoding is enabled and working perfectly fine on all the other movies / shows. It’s hardware decoding using the GTX1660 i installed in that server.

hardware transcoding the movie down to 1080p to view on my tablet for example runs buttery smooth…

i compared it to my copy of John Wick 3… same video & audio codec… AC3 for audio h256 for video
