Usually, doing something like fast travel or changing equipment/appearance will always trigger an autosave. There’s often also some little icon or spinner in the corner that happens whenever the game saves. If you learn what that looks like and watch for it, you can get confirmation that the game saved. But it can be different in different games, so you’ll want to look it up for each specific game you’re playing.
(But, yeah. Kind of dumb overall. Autosave is nice, but it should not be a replacement for manual save. The best kind of game is one that has autosave and manual saves.)
