The MacBook air 2012 was already particularly bad in its lifetime, I remember doing it support for the company I was working for at the time and the air 2012 were only used for lightweight stuff but already so slow.
with apple devices, they do have long update periode. But when its over, the device is basically trash.
It’s not in the regular update cycle anymore but there is an Open Source tool to patch it.
