It’s a stupidly strong card for way too rich players wanting to show off and are sore losers anyways.

I got a stupid amount of money selling my old power 9 while some douch looks stupid for wasting a stupid amount of money on 9 pieces of cardboard. I bought my black lotus for 100 Dutch Guilders (€45) and sold it for €3000.

I bought a gold border time vault for €6, I sold it for €1200 after it became tournament legal in vintage.

I own both cards multiple times now, as I bought aliexpress proxies for €0.20 each so I can still play those cards when with friends, but I don’t because they are not fun to play with.

I don’t play magic much but I remember this meme: that card is exceptionally rare and worth a ridiculous amount of money

That’s a black lotus from the original alpha print run of magic. Only 1100 were ever made so depending on condition that card could be in the hundreds of thousands to low millions

I played MTG many moons ago. Was fun for awhile but quickly turned into this excessively competitive game. If you played you basically had to build certain decks to compete. I didn’t like the lack of freedom to experiment.

        The internet ruined TCG.

Once you could go online, look up the meta and order the cards you need it became P2W.

I watched yugioh as a kid on tv. It was part of the story that the rich sephiroth guy was clearly p2w. Very hot take: Anybody who goes out of their way to follow metas in games is a tool.

I mean, the rich Sephiroth in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime was literally the “inventor” of the game, so that’s why he did some P2W whenever he played, as he had access to basically any card he desired, including unreleased ones afaik, and yeah, he’s also super rich, you’re right.

(I wrote “inventor” in quotation marks because, according to the lore, it was ancient Egyptians who invented the game, the rich Sephiroth whose name I still can’t recall only brought it back to the modern age. But yeah, Yu-Gi-Oh! lore is pretty weird.)

Lmao I completely forgot how weird that show was, and only remember a few tidbits. I watched it in the 90s I think.

Edit oh god i just remembered the aryan dragons too lmaoooo

Edit2: omg i just read a cbr bio on the guy literally named Maximilian Pegasus:

Pegasus is the creator of Duel Monster and the president of Industrial Illusions. He is the first antagonist introduced in the original Yu-Gi-Oh anime. He has his hands on various cards that have not been seen by the public eye but tends to use his toon/illusion deck when dueling.

Pegasus is in possession of the Millennium eye. Pegasus wanted to gain control of KaibaCorp for their Solid Vision and all the Millennium items to resurrect his dead lover Cecelia. He went as far as to take the souls of Kaiba, Mokuba Kaiba, and Solomen Muto in his efforts to save his wife. When Yugi defeats him he becomes an ally to Yugi and his friends throughout the rest of the series.

Ridiculous. Imagine that read by the English dbz narrator. I’m literally laughing out loud irl

              Okay okay I’m done.

Eh, you can buy a Commander precon and win games right now. The game is fine. My budget decks rack up plenty of wins. There’s actually a lot of fun to be had in finding cheap ways to do what the expensive decks do and building around undervalued cards. My Xyris deck is now kill on sight for anyone who’s ever played against it and it’s my cheapest deck by far.

MTG is very very different. I used to play with my group of friends around the release of 2nd edition. Mostly bought them from a comic store. It was picking up hype, but felt not so bloated as around 4th or 5th think I ducked out around then?

Was around when everyone was “you have to make a slivers deck!” what was that Tempest? Shit got too expensive and there were a lot of “you have to buy this card or buy this premade deck” displays showing up.

Also I was dumping all my funds into Warhammer 40k, I left TCG’s in the dust. Than eventually I left 40k because I needed my money to pay rent and live.

I had a shadow deck loosely based on that method. There was:

        • an artifact that decreased cycling costs by 2
        • an artifact that let mana be played untapped
        • a bunch of monsters with a cycle cost of 2 where the cycle benefit was adding a mana
        • a spell to search your deck for mana for each creature in your grave
        • and one dealing X/X damage per shadow/clear mana tapped.

It was about the only thing I found that could reliably beat a sliver deck, but if you didn’t get the artifacts you were screwed.

The usual competitive play is to only allow cards from the current season and It’s relatively balanced within that. But there are competitions (and obviously just for fun games) where all bets are off.

Correct! An ungraded version is worth about $50k and a PSA 10 (“perfect” condition) can go for more than $2M.

About 10 years ago a card shop I went to had one that was in bad condition (mild creases) with an actual tear in the card in the top corner. The owner had it in the display case with a price tag of $4,000 on it just to attract attention with no intentions of actually selling it. Apparently someone at a point later came in an bought it for the $4k price he had it listed for.

When I was a kid, the local game store had a framed Black Lotus. I have no idea what PSA it was, but they wanted $400 for it, and my thinking was, geez, I would never pay $400 for a card.

And to be fair, that is still true. I would never pay $400 for a card, but also if the me back then knew that one day it would be worth $50,000, I might have thought differently about it.

Some people are stupid with money, or they just have too much.

I used to work in a whisky bar and we were going to host a Yamazaki tasting. We bought a bottle of the 25yo for like $3000. I put it on the menu for $10k as a joke, some guy came in said “what’s your most expensive whisky” and I mentioned that bottle. He bought it, had one shot out of it and left. Never came back. I let that bottle sit on the shelf for two years (we normally only give people six months to finish the bottles, not legally allowed to take them out of the bar) before just taking it home and drinking it myself.

Had to buy a new bottle for the tasting and the supplier was shocked he sold even one of them at the $3k price lol. It’s now $14,000 retail for a bottle.

I don’t play magic so I still don’t understand how a card can be expensive. Or rather, why would anyone play a “pay to win” game?

Because it’s not pay to win, people are just salty. Get someone to teach you Commander, its a casual format that’s a lot of fun to play even with budget decks. I don’t put expensive cards in any of my decks and I win plenty. My wife runs a deck that I built her for only slightly more than the cost of a basic preconstructed deck and she’s become kill on sight among the people she regularly plays with because it’s so strong.

For some context, it’s part of the first ever Magic cards printed. However, players quickly figured out you can win on your first turn before your opponent even plays if you stuff your deck with them, so it was banned and removed from print.

An old card with a small amount printed due to being accidentally OP makes for a huge price today.
