I’m really into cybersecurity and wanted to be a “hacker” ever since I was a little kid and I want to learn more about it with not just YouTube tutorials. I there a privacy focused way to learn cybersecurity, and is hack the box or try hack me viable options?

hackboxes are among the best ways if you’d like to learn red teaming in a more practical way, the best cost money though. learn how to set up the blue side in a secure way, expose it to the internet and own it, if you have ram for vms. learn how to use sniffers, how to configure routers and networks and services. lighter scripting on something like python helps. some of the offensive tools use ruby.

a bit of work in related areas will leave you with a good idea of common pitfalls (and potential vulnerabilities) in their setups. watching normies use electronics is frustrating but shows you kinda how all the dumb phishing can go right. this helps you understand risks (as well as opportunities)

there used to be some huge checklist of stuff on some github repo for things you can learn to be proficient, i bet you could find it if it still exists.
