Hello, I am a computer science major, graduated with my BS in 2014. I worked for years across three different companies (or 5 if you split up the mergers, or way more if you count contracting work). I feel my resume is strong, but I lack some crucial pieces:

I have no references, as I left my most recent company on bad terms. The response I got when I criticized their RTO demands was that it was just “funny money” involved in keeping the buildings occupied.

I have no portfolio. My GitHub projects are messy and out-of-date. I started a new one recently, but I’m burnt out and finding it difficult to work on. I have a website, but it is limited in terms of features (I still haven’t bothered implementing the search bar out of fears of mishandling potential SQL injections etc) and contains many personal videos of mine, including vlogs as I went through a recent mental health crisis from which I am still attempting to recover. I leave them up on the off chance they might help somebody, but any potential employer will probably not be sympathetic to or understanding of my behavior.

Finally, I have no AI experience. I don’t really want to support that particular part of the tech industry, I see it doing too much harm. But most companies are all-in on it and specifically looking for AI devs.

So, yes, I have been applying to local fast food places. So far, only McDonald’s interviewed me, but they said they’re not hiring right now. Mostly I get no responses at all. I’ll keep trying until money runs out. I don’t know what will happen then.

I wish I had gone for environmental science instead. I want to do conservation work. I went for computer science because I wanted to make video games, not to sit through mindnumbing meetings and be forced to use bloated corporate bullshit to accomplish nothing for nobody. I wish I could have known how things would go.

I hope others are doing better, but it sounds like there are many layoffs going around and fewer opportunities to share. Good luck.

if you want to be overworked and be moderately appreciated ems is always an option, you can find an emt program and it is gonna be 3-4 months and 600 ish dollars total if you dont need to buy brand new copies of your books like some people do. in the short term see if any agencies around you hire drivers.

i wont lie, it is pretty shit if you dont really like healthcare but the pay is decent and the community appreciates you

you do need to be able to lift a fair bit and run for short bursts but basically as long as you can make it up a couple flights of stairs and arent terrible under pressure most places will hire you.

Maybe it’s not too late to go into environmental science?

And it’s also never too late to work on a video game in your free time :) If that’s what you are passionate about you can put that on GitHub as well.

References don’t have to be affiliated with the company. Were you on good terms with any of your coworkers? Ask them to be the reference. Did you have a manager you were on good terms with who left before you did? They can be your reference. Also get references from the previous employers, even if it was a long time ago.

I think most of them will say “no”, especially because it has been years since we worked together. But I may ask some of them just to confirm. Thank you.

Being a reference is pretty low stakes, and I have never had anyone decline. I usually go about a decade back when I supply references, and I skip any company I’m still employed at.

My friend has multiple degrees, one military, and a FAANG-laden resume. He was 2.5 years out of work after his last startup ghosted him.

That wrapping speed is insane. But the initialization and calibration is time consuming, it would help to create a service running once calibration is complete. Else isn’t amortized cost of the ‘slow’ method just fine?

When I wore the mcHairnet, we didn’t need to practice before each one.

For the first 2 years, also, we had the incineratable polystyrene boxes instead of the dyed-to-unreusable wax cardboard.
