Couple of years ago I saw a video about Chris Chan, and when describing “Sonicu” they labeled it as “creative unoriginality”.
I often think of this term these days.
This (the dune ai thing) is unfortunately uncreative unoriginality, aka straight garbage trash slop.
Sonichu is at least “lol what if my psychotic delusions combined my two favorite characters and i married them” which is, at the very least, interesting. A lot of good and creative characters are just X+Y= new thing
Sonichu was creative compared to people using AI. At least Chris-chan drew it herself!
He took someone’s novel, someone’s animation style, someone’s film look, someone’s likeness, and created an abortion of a animation blending all those other human creations together, all the while using a data centre that consumes water resource and emits carbon dioxide that someone else is paying for.
And yet somehow he takes this as his idea and a win.

What idea you dumbfuck? You have only taken a book and ask a chatbot to make a ghibli film out of it. You call that an “idea”? You’re so dumb when this bubble pops you’re gonna starve to death because there is not a chatbot telling you when to eat; and it will be a good thing for the world.
He couldn’t even be arsed to do original casting or costume design, because this looks exactly like Timothy Chalomet and Zendaya in Dennis Villeneuve’s Dune. His idea was “you made dis? …I made dis.”
Well, not exactly like. Zendaya’s appearance has been noticeably altered in one quite specific way.
The AI clearly wants to play it safe in regards to inappropriate depictions of darker skin. Problem solved!

That’s the process not the idea. The idea is “I want these two dune characters to slurp their lips with each other”.

somehow reminds me of people using all the animations in PowerPoint. like “looks how cool this is” instead if “look what I made with it”.
and honestly, maybe the maker was aware of that connection (the one pointed out in the post), u never know. peeps are still peeps even if one doesnt like them.

Tbf to them that’s just how anime be. Come to think of it, Naruto was actually insanely woke in its anime time for having actually black characters (even when it made the most prominent one a rapper), that’s something even the otherwise wildly leftist Ghibli works tended to avoid.
Though I think you could argue that characters like San from Princess Mononoke are inclusive of indigenous Japanese groups in a way that’s both underacknowledged and more relevant to daily Japanese life.

There’s a ton of commentary out there on this but tl;dr Miyazaki was a Marxist in his youth and is probably best recently described as an ecosocialist and all his works reflect values of anti authoritarianism, rejecting patriarchy, environmentalism, and pacifism or at least the rejection of militarism.
He is, in short, a Japanese Green (not literally since there is a Japanese Green party but also possibly literally)
While anime as a medium has a long history of being really, really shit at dark skinned characters, that doesn’t excuse the fact that these models are completely fucking incapable of creating a darker skinned character as a result
Yes, it’s a direct result of how skewed their training data is, but that just calls out how fundamentally flawed the whole process is. A good artist is capable of adopting an anime style while still creating things that are unusual within that style. Just look at the Avatar series. Korra, Kotara and Sokka can all be darker skinned characters that look amazing in a show that still has a distinctly anime look to it.
Characters in anime are not required to be light skinned. That’s a flaw, not a thing to be preserved as if it’s a requirement of the style. Even in actual anime we’re finally starting to see this change for the better. But LLMs cannot produce things that are new or unusual, they can only regress to the mean.
