Quad9 is leaving France over pirate site blocking orders, which makes it the second DNS resolver to leave the country. Quad9 will stop serving French users on November 24, after a Paris court set a €1,000 daily penalty for not blocking pirate tennis streams. Faced with this order and roughly 20 other pending French cases, Quad9 says that it has no other viable option left.
They’re suspending service to French users, not physically leaving (I don’t know where they are). It seems they’re not sure how to do that, though.
Simple geoblocking IP tables or firewall rule. There’s no way their team couldn’t figure this out, Google has the answer.
I don’t think folks like them would bother with geoblocking, given their principle. Most likely the French govt would block them first.
how? They use DNS to “block” access to websites by not resolving domain name, if they would have an other way to block a service they wouldn’t need to ask DNS provider to do so
Seems like they’re blocking French networks (ISPs?) instead of IP addresses, since GeoIP blocking was found insufficient by a German court. I struggled to understand their actual plans from their blogpost though, maybe someone else can interpret it better?
