I never know what to do with myself when I schedule something at my home, and my social anxiety makes me worried that I’m always going to be judged like this. I don’t have any work because I took the day off for this service. Do I just fuck off and continue gaming while the person is working?
I usually sit right there with them, watching and talking. I’ve found most people who work in trades love to explain what they’re doing, and it’s like a free class. Actually, more like a class you pay a lot for. Anyway, occasionally I’ve had someone who obviously isn’t interested in talking, but the overwhelming majority are totally down.
I used to think this way until I considered how they felt. It’s really stressful to have someone breathing down your neck while you work, so I usually just show them where the work area is and answer any questions they have then tell them where I’ll be if they need something.
On the flip side, the only time I’ve judged someone in this situation is a girl who had been sleeping before we came by for maintenance, didn’t answer the door so we let ourselves in (notice given in advance) and she was in the bedroom still half asleep and just awake enough to tell us which rooms were getting worked on for turn. She was literally crawling back into bed and covering herself in a blanket while speaking to us. Wasn’t harsh judgment or anything, more of a “that was a weird interaction.”
Basically, yeah. Your taking the day off for them to be there is the reason you don’t have work, which you otherwise would. People who perform that kind of work aren’t likely to judge you, since people being in their homes when workers show up is about as common as tap water. If someone does decide to judge you for that, then it speaks more about their lack of reason than however lazy you might think you appear to be to them.
I typically just sit on my phone while they work, and possibly chat with them if they feel like chatting
Idk, gaming on my computer feels like “too much”, if that makes sense, but that may just be because of negative associations from when people watched me sit on the PC in the past. Being on your phone feels more socially acceptable and you don’t get so “lock in” if that makes sense
That said, I think it’s perfectly acceptable to be om your computer yeah

We are always watching. Judging.
