For those unaware, Linus Torvalds this year has deeply cast his lot with the hyperscale LLMs for development of Linux code, dismissing arguments that this is an abdication of responsibility over that code base.

Then go make your own if you disagree, the fork button is right there
Ahem
(If you’ve previously contributed to the Linux kernel, contact me for verification, and then maybe could add you.)
Pretending “just forking” is a viable option is disingenuous. There’s momentum and an organizational structure which evolved through decades, which cannot be replaced overnight.
What really bothers me about “just fork it” is that it is a viewpoint fundamentally opposed to collaboration
I think the anti-ai crowd beat me to “opposed to collaboration,” that’s how we got here in the first place.
If these folks didn’t screech about other people’s choices they wouldn’t hear “just fork it”
I think the point is we disagree with the premise that AI is inherently collaborative- but that’s not the main point, there are very many other complex and morally fraught considerations using AI code in general.
“I wholly disagree with the direction this project is taking and I want nothing to do with said direction” is already an opposition of collaboration… just saying.
Well if you’re so smart why don’t you just go fork yourself?!
I don’t mind that Linus is using whatever tools he wants? I don’t have that same weird need
It’s not the tools he’s using. It’s the fact that he has already misused those tools.
