I love her to bits but I can’t figure out how she though this was a gold idea. It puts fumes into the food

For like 40 bucks you can buy a sealer. It doesn’t work well though. Best to not use plastic at all. I hate plastic.

We all agree this is bad for food safety, but don’t you think regular sealing will affect the food as well? Of course melting the edges to seal them will produce some amount of gasses, even if it’s not burning, just like warm water will evaporate even if it’s not boiling. We shouldn’t use plastics for packaging at all.

…yes, and limit the shelf life of the product, which is plastics’ biggest benefit. Air and water tight packaging extends shelf lives to ridiculous lenghts, especially if filled with an inert gas like your typical bag of fresh salad leaves. Besides saving money on produce that would spoil without plastic packaging, alternative packaging would entail changing people’s eating habits, especially in the northern hemisphere. But we really need to, you know? :/

much better to use even plastic boxes meant for storing food, or even ziplock bags. there are plenty glass containers too. metal clips with the neodynium magnets, even is safer.

A few years ago my octogenarian mom became incapable of sealing ziplock bags. It drove me insane because I would repeatedly go to open something like chips or crackers that I had put in ziplocks only to find the seal partly open and the contents stale. I got in the habit of just going through everything in the pantry every couple of hours and resealing all the bags. I thought this was age-related until we hired a mid-20s home helper for her and the helper had the same problem. I don’t know what it is – ziplock bags aren’t that hard to use properly.

For all the comments in here, I’m surprised nobody’s pointed out there’s a good chance she’s simply not aware of the health effects. If she’s receptive, this could be a good chance to educate her.

You can’t communicate health concerns about stuff to old people like this, I can’t. It’s never worked, and more often than not they strangely hate you for it.

Why worry about “microplastics” when you can inhale the fumes in your home and consume macroplastics in your food!? Mmm, tastes like burning…
