    Non-US here: What I don’t understand is, wouldn’t the GOP win his seat with pretty much any candidate that has a pulse? Why is he still a senator while m.i.a.?

      In a general election, yes. Which is why McConnell’s team is holding out until November.

      In a special election to fill one seat, it’s possible that turnout could go in favor of a less staunch Trumpican or even a Democrat.
