A fellow mod informed me that about it as I was laying in bed. Reddit sent a message to the mod team and after 1 hour demoded me. I didn’t even had time to see it, never-mind respond to it.
Looks like we rattled reddit enough to start shooting. There goes all that fancy talk about our protest not affecting them much.
Just FYI for now. It’s late here so I’ll see how we proceed tomorrow.
This could not be any funnier. Please reddit, take legal control of the piracy subreddit, right as you take the experienced mod team out. I’m sure everything will go fantastic.
Reddit will sure be a lovely site in a few months…
May their shareholders weep.
If you take away what the people want
You’re gonna have a bad time. ⛷️
I’m sad to see what has happened to the community I’ve been a part of for the better part of my life.

I heard Disney really likes it when their content is shared through Reddit without them getting a cut of the profits. ;)
they’re gonna love that sweet, sweet liability
I had a good hearty laugh thanks to your comment.
lol yeah
Haha what the fuck I really did NOT think they would do that to r/piracy of all things. Ah well fuck them and their shitty IPO. I‘m here with you guys for good, the structure of the fediverse suits our purposes and community better anyway.
I would imagine that can lead to legal troubles endorsing r/piracy willingly?
Accepting it is one thing, but forcing it to open is entirely different.
I would imagine too, but who knows, there is a different set of rules for companies and the rich.
Now that Reddit is asserting direct control over it, maybe they‘ll turn it into an anti-piracy sub to prevent any legal trouble.
Well, they could just say: “We made a script to track every mod who closed their sub, revogate its mod permissions and notify all other mods in the sub with an automatic message”, which basically frees them from any charges regarding community content.
They could, however, be sued for not actively removing illegal content, such as pirated things and MAP related things (e.g. r/jailbait)
Honestly it would probably be easy to force the sub to go dark again via ban by posting direct piracy links.
I say transfer as much as you can over here, then nuke the sub completely. The source of knowledge are mostly here now and everything else can be rebuild. We are pirates, we don’t yield easily and can survive anywhere.
Mods can’t nuke the sub, the only thing anyone can do is delete their own user content. However, even then reddit can probably restore it.
I figured. If websites like unddit, ceddit, removeddit etc was able to recover deleted posts and comments, I’m sure the admins can do so too.
But we’re also a crafty bunch. There must be a way to destroy the sub where reddit can’t restore it properly. Like how a user can mass edit their own comments/posts before deleting them, so when reddit restore them back they would only show the edits instead of the originals. Basically use reddit’s own feature against them if we can.
Even small thing like getting rid of the megathread and wiki would discourage people to go into the sub. It’s information that people after, if we get rid of those then there’s no point in going anymore. Slower death and a little anticlimactic that way though.
As far as I know, they only store the last version on the live system. So if you just overwrite it with gibberish and then or don’t delete it, only the backups will have your true comments.
I’m seeing recent comments that dispute this. Users who used power delete suite have discovered their comment history restored against their will
AFAIK all restored comments came from subs that went open again, because removal plugins can‘t remove comments and posts from private subs.
Hmm.
But at least the comments will be useless to the public coz people will only see the edited one right?
And how funny would it be for a corpo like reddit to go out of their way to restore content designed to make piracy easier?

This bullshit made me nuke my 30k karma account. I hope lemmy won’t die month later.

That’s literally impossible! An instance may go down, but it will stay cached.
Okie, I’m absolute noob here. Right now I struggle to find night mode. :D

This is not a simple problem to solve and it exists nowhere online. The fediverse however affords at least way more control than reddit or any forum where they can do the same and you have no options whatsoever

You’ve sold me on nostr as a protocol, and the importance of nomadic identities more generally. Thing is, I don’t and have never used twitter, or any simililar platform, since I’m not really interested in that model of content consumption. (User/follower based)
I’m much more interested in group/community based models, like lemmy/reddit, and conceptually even futaba/chan style imageboards where users can create their own boards (though I have yet to see one that isn’t a cesspit).
I checked nosr. It’s very misguided. It’s anti-spam strategy is wishful thinking. I wish them best of luck, but my belief is that it will crash and burn due to trying to fix something unfixable.

relays can choose to block content.
This is so naive I don’t even know where to start. But it’s ok, I don’t need to convince you. Reality will do it for me anyway.
But what other federated entity allows for nomadic identities? And how would it work?
So Reddit is forcing open a piracy sub. I wonder how potential investors would feel about that?
Well I guess its time to flood r/piracy with magnet links as soon as the new jannies open it.
Also worth flooding them with
linksa map to where they can board the new ship where the 🏴☠️ flag still flies high.I’m constantly linking people to Lemmy communities when I’m posting. I’m deleting my account on the 30th but until then I’ll shill for Fediverse
Bonus points if they’re Nintendo games!
why magnet links in particular?
I mean could be any link to copyright material but I generally grab magnet links so shrug
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Fuck those Reddit punks, people can make a better piracy community in the fediverse.
Hello how did you change the font on your username?
My guess is fancy font generator and setting that as displayed name.
I have used a Twitter(it work for any platform anyway) font editor you can search it at Google or whatever search engine you use.
@MrComradeTaco @collegefurtrader
Not to be that guy, but I think accessibility advocates would rather you didn’t do that, because it causes issues for screen readers for the visually handicapped.Just call your local politician and tell them to create a law banning fonts you don’t like.
Yeah, can we defederate* from this guy and his fancy fonts?
* Whatever the hell that means
Lol who cares
@abc123@lemmy.fmhy.ml
Blind people care. You don’t need to know usernames to read the comments
Looks like I made the right decision to join Lemmy today. Reddit is a sinking ship
The hole started its development as soon as old reddit was gone.
Look at them using the community and users as a shield and a bargaining chip.
It’s pathetic, really. They say it doesn’t affect them but then they threaten and force people to reopen
“We don’t like that you’re protesting against us shitting on our users, so think about the users, and stop protesting against us.”
Yup. I originally was just going to stop using reddit, but since they’ve been undeleting comments and forcing subs to reopen I also went out of my way to delete my 9 year comment, submission, and vote history, and will continue to monitor it and delete again if they try to restore it.
What the hell reddit? This is r/piracy, we’ve had backup plans on other platforms for ages. Of all the subs to forcibly reopen they do the one with the lowest chance of anyone going back? This has to just be a trial to see how forcibly reopening the front page subs is going to go when they do that.
Good point, I doubt many other subs have escape plans. So yeah we’d be the first to jump ship. Not a good control group for an experiment.
Oh thank God, i first thought that the reddit navy entered Lemmy. i don’t care about what happens on reddit, in fact, i’e be happy if they’d harm it.
But: can’t mods nuke the subreddit history before they’re demoded?
reddit will porobably undelete anything like that anyway
Yes, but it would cause them extra work. Just say you volunteer to open up again and take the lead, then go for it 🤭
There are two problems with this :
-
Nuking all this valuable info will waste years and years of people trying to share their knowledge.
-
Reddit will probably un-delete it.
Isn’t Reddit GDPR copliant? Because if they are, they can’t simply undelete things without users’ permission
Reddit is also stupid. So no idea.
Depends if it’s the user that asked for deletion or a mod.
I don’t think comments you made are covered by GDPR. Unless you got personal information in the comment
By putting content on Reddit you have agreed to make it theirs.
Don’t know what the GDPR has to do with that. That is about protection of personal data.
Reddit comments are ultimately opinions of the user. Under GDPR, the user has the right to correct information that is wrong. Thus, a user has a right to correct and remove their opinions, and this right supersedes their terms and conditions.
Tell everyone to come here while slowly deleting the content over time from multiple accounts. That should make it harder to restore. Oh and edit what you can instead of just deleting.
-
Reddit will probably undelete the content. Some former reddit users have reported that all the posts they nuked out of existence was restore a couple days later without their consent.
We’ll build a better ship with a sturdier ram, 32 pounder cannons and free wenches and rum! Dbzer0 for captain, 2023
Why not just start allowing direct links to pirated content on the subreddit?
Cause this website hoster is also legaly liable, and want to avoid the most risky stuff to happen here.
(I mean, there is the fact it’s an hoster, and remove most liability under certain extent and in certain context, but still)
Not on the lemmy community, on the subreddit
First post on Lemmy thanks to this shit! Struggling to understand how a lot of it works still, but absolutely fuck this nonsense from Reddit
As a user not running your own instance, it’s very similar to Reddit.
It’s pretty straightforward really. Just be sure to branch out a bit and look at content from other instances - although, as a lemmy.world user you currently can’t interact with beehaw.org.
Well here I am, screw Reddit. Didn’t much like supporting the corporate greed and corruption anyway.
That pinned New Users Guide is a big help. Was a bit confused at first, but I think I get the instance and location thing now. It’s actually pretty ingenious. Don’t know if any of you are old enough to remember the BBS days when a bunch of them interconnected on FidoNet, reminds me of that. Very cool, like an old idea anew.
This instance (lemmy.dbzer0.com) seems to be in Germany and I’m in the USA so it can get pretty laggy on me. Need to find a USA instance. I tried signing up for lemmy.one and beehaw.org which are USA, but they have a vetting process where I had to fill in some questions and wait for a reply. That’s kind of weird. Those are good ones right, non toxic? This one let me sign up instantly so in any case it should do for now, or later if not’s too slow for me.
Lemmy.one seems very non toxic.
I just got my authorization for lemmy.one. It’s close to me so it’s super fast, was having real problems with the local instance here, not the operator’s fault, just my relative location. Anyway I’m all set to browse the fediverse with Lemmy, reminds me of the old days of the internet, before everything was monetized. Reddit did me a favor by blowing me out.
Same for Beehaw. They’re working really hard to keep everything kind, to the point they defederated with communities with open sign ups that were sending lots of low-effort/mean/troll comments.
Just run your own instance. If you can run a Plex server, you might have enough technical chop to run Lemmy in a spare computer somewhere in your closet.
I’m on beehaw and they’re great, the team is truly worried with the community and maintaining a non toxic place. They defederated with lemmy.world because of it, and they upset a few people, so keep that in mind (I just have a second account to stay around with the chill comunnitymies in .world)
I also didn’t gey any message letting me know I got in, so just try to log in after a few days and see if it goes through.
