Word play explained unravels the joke, and leaves it flat.
It always does, but it at least lets the puzzled figure it out. (You might want to put that in a spoiler, though.)
I needed the explanation, and totally agree that this is funny as hell.
However, by virtue of the nicheness and need of latin, I don’t think it’s a good dad joke. It’s a multilingual pun, and those tend to fall outside of the level of accessibility a dad can reasonably expect to pull off.
