Your local library board just voted to pull books from the shelves — the same books you can buy at any bookstore on Main Street. Nothing stops a parent from buying those exact titles for their own child. The only thing a public shelf ban does is stop other people’s children from reading them in a place funded by all of us.

That double standard is the tell. If the concern were really about content, the fix would be parental choice at home, not censorship in public institutions. ‘Age-appropriateness’ votes are often less about age and more about which ideas get to exist in shared spaces. History books, science books, literature: when a community removes them because it disagrees with what they say, that is ideological control wearing a child-safety costume.

None of this requires burning anything down. It just requires saying plainly what is happening at those public meetings: an organized effort to narrow the range of acceptable thought in American towns, one book at a time — and the kids who will inherit these institutions deserve to know their options were curated for them.
