I’ve been around 500 kV when I worked on industrial solar farms.
I only worked on the “low voltage” inverters, which took 1000V DC and converted to 1500V AC. Then it went into the medium voltage 34 kV transformer attached to it, I only worked on that a few times when traveling. From there it went to the grid distribution which was 500 kV

in the realm of high voltage, everything is a wire
very inefficiently i guess. air has larger resistance than cable so it heats up a lot when current flows through it, which is why it’s glowing hot plasma in the first place. (also the plasma is what makes the air slightly more conductive)

Why were they filming?
My guess is the disconnect was scheduled and they know there was a chance of an arc
There could’ve been sparks before that got their attention
My understanding is that they can do this on purpose by not doing the turn-off stages right

When they’re confident they can pull out before blowing the fuse, but they still leave a mess.
