Today’s picture is that of a grey whale! Grey whales are a part of the order of Baleen whales whoch have TWO blowholes for twice the fun. Their purpose is not to expel water, but to breathe, as whales, being mammals, breathe air and not through water. They’re similar to nostrils.
They can also be up to 50 feet long and weigh 45 tonnes. Very big cuties. But this also makes them quite scary, and why they were nicknamed the devil fish, as they fought back when hunted, with special ferocity being show by those protecting their young. Unfortunately, not vicious enough because they’re now extinct in the Mediterranean and north atlantic.
Like other species of whales, they’re very smart and curious. They like to get close to humans and even let the humans touch them.
Grey whales love to scoop up and eat shellfish, so they hunt around the coast, letting these human and whale interactions occur. They also travel up to 19000km in a year!
