I’m sure everyone lately has noticed there’s a tonne of hate on the privacy subreddit, with every new post/comment there getting more and more aggresive than the last
I personally am loving the Lemmy community but I feel as though keeping the piracy subreddit in it’s current state is making users of it quite hostile to change since they believe they are being forced to move
This will honestly make them refuse to ever use Kbin/Lemmy since in their eyes it’s the moderators and users here that have killed r/Piracy (obviously wrong of the stick it’s Reddit that’s killing it’s own communities with it’s policies)
So I guess it’s a question of should we as a community hand over the subreddit to a new moderation team or some other change since I don’t feel like it’s doing us any favours
Hoping to use this post as a sort of discussion about people’s opinions
Just purge reddit from your mind and be done with it.
This. I’m baffled by people coming here to talk about Reddit.
That’s baffling you? The majority of resources are on reddit right now and - unfortunately - people don’t care to move elsewhere. They just want their links and answers to questions that have been asked and answered 10,000 times and that’s it.
Again: Unfortunately.
I think that’s the point, the people who care about things like the API changes have already made the migration, the rest of the losers stuck there in rubbit don’t matter to us, and as other posters noted this is likely the group of people is productive. Who cares. Leave them behind.
Not sure what this vast collection of resources is that you’re pining over. Theeye, among the vast majority of actual piracy resources, were never really on rubbit anyway…
Not sure what this vast collection of resources is that you’re pining over.
In that case, I was talking about Plebbit as a whole. Many search results for interesting queries still lead to Reddit.
I did that and I live happier, communities will move to the Fediverse, don’t over think it
Fuck doing this any easier to reddit. I’m of the mind to just remove all mods, set the community to restricted and if reddit wants to re-open it, they can find new mods themselves.
Unfortunately a few of the existing mods want to continue with reddit only and I’m not top mod anymore, so…
People are so brain dead that they think the only place to get answers on piracy is reddit. Even 4chan is better if they can’t be bothered to come here or raddle or any piracy forums that exist outside of reddit if they are left that clueless.
Should nuke the stuff on reddit, and give it back to them to figure it all out for themselves. They can have their sub if they want to talk piracy on reddit that much. Probably go about recommending piratebay to each other to download software and games.
That should be the way for every sub really. Just wipe and leave it unmoderated and tell the people who are whining to go mod it themselves now that it’s back open.
Even 4chan is better
RIP Trove.
I disagree on nuking it. Its still user generated content and isn’t up to the mods to decide what happens to all of that. We just need to grow this community so that this is the real source for piracy related information.
honestly this seems like an better choice
I’m older, and remember the days when the internet was “hard” (pre web). And because you had to work a little bit to find information, you tended to stick with, and contribute to the groups you found. Better engagement, better discussion, more inside jokes, better community. Reddit has just turned into an echo chamber of the lowest common denominator. Lemmy feels a bit more like the old days - a community with actual content.
I vote: do whatever you want with it (kill it, hand it over, whatever). Let’s leave it behind and concentrate on making this place awesome.
i hear this sentiment often and as a younger person i feel like i missed out on something cool
At least you never got the chance. As a 40+yo, I feel like I had chance after chance to do great work and never took it, because I was young and lazy and selfish. And now it’s so much harder to do everything.
this! having to work a little to find the community is a good filter, bc its not even that hard to find, but the effort makes sure everyone who comes here actually WANTS to find quality content
From the looks of it, seems like the people who don’t care about the API are the ones left behind, makes me think these are the type of people who don’t contribute; and sooner or later they’ll realize that.
I fully agree. It’s brain drain
Still, that’s not an argument against what OP is proposing? Let them have it and moderate it to the best of their capabilities, and let them come here if the resulting community is not up to their standards.
The comment quality is that sub went down in recent weeks. Many people don’t seem understand philosophical underpinnings.
I don’t remember the last time I went to r/piracy except to check the megathread. Most of the content I came across there are low effort memes and low effort discussions but I had to check it recently to see pics of sexy pirates then I saw all the drama.
I’m absolutely disgusted by subs whose essence supposedley is anti-corpo yet aren’t planning to moving to another platform because they love Reddit so much! Of course, some mods in r/piracy actually made the effort to get people elsewhere but a lot of the users turned out to be corporate bootlickers.
I hope the users get charged a monthly subscription to access Reddit so they could come here to ask for modded Reddit apps.
Anyway, I don’t really care what happens to r/piracy. There’s a copy of the megathread here and if I need help, then I’m sure the users here are much more knowledgeable.
Legit, I only looked there for the megathread too. It was just a cesspool of low effort content and people who didn’t check the megathread, if I’m gonna be honest.
Forget about Reddit. The shittier it gets, the better for us. It will also help keep aggressive haters out of Lemmy by accumulating them outside.
I don’t even know why we want them to move. If they want to be hateful and angry - let them squabble amongst themselves. And let Reddit hire paid moderators if they want to manage it. It’s officially not our problem.
Put another way: Those who fall behind get left behind.
Meh, Reddit admins will do whatever they’ll ultimately decide to do with that subreddit. I don’t see why anyone needs to make Reddit admins’ job easier, they are literally employed and being paid to deal with this stuff. If they want to force replace mods in any subreddit they can, if they want to force close any subreddit they can.
Also remember it’s Reddit, the complainers are free to create new subreddits & become moderators themselves.
I think people with that mentality largely already have, they’ve just done it here because they understand the community and discussion are the value. I don’t think many people clinging this hard to reddit are going to be the type to pilot new communities.
I don’t think many people clinging this hard to reddit are going to be the type to pilot new communities.
Yeah you’re right, maybe it’s just wishful thinking haha. A lot of these complainers threaten to create new subs (like that’s a threat?) to try to replace privated subs… and yet for some reason they don’t actually do it.
Yup, don’t worry about it, don’t think about it
Not our monkeys, not our circus
Doesn’t that go the other way around?
Pirates have always been known to be aggressive since they were sailing on boats with hooks and swords.
“Today’s pirates are too mean!”
You’re right, I also got the pirate experience on the same sub…
Instead of thinking about what we could do on reddit, think about what we’re going to do on Lemmy.
Read it? yeah, I’ll read it on lemmy.
i havent been to r/piracy in years, unsubbed back in 2014 or so, too many kids just wanting easy links, not enough good content.
Since the move to lemmy its been great. I have no cares for the old site, let it live, let it burn, whoever takes it over is going to have a new unpaid job, wheee!
Haven’t noticed, not been spending much time or mental bandwidth on snoosite. No opinion on what happens to r/piracy.
Good for you. But since the subreddit is the explicit topic or this thread the right thing to do would have been to not post a reply at all.
Thank you for your input. However, the explicit topic of this thread is what the original poster is “sure everyone lately has noticed”, and they went on to solicit “a sort of discussion about people’s opinions”. As I am sure you are aware, stating that I have not in fact noticed and therefore have no opinion is nothing but engaging with the topic. Please do not derail the topic further. Thank you. :)
I just wanna talk about Piracy. I don’t care where and why where.
People who haven’t joined or even tried Lemmy at this point are just close-minded. What stopped them from joining Lemmy during the initial days of blackout, way before all the John Olivier fuckfest? These same users are acting like you can’t use one more site. Probably addicted to Reddit karma.
Reddit will not improve and it will get worse for sure. It’s actually good all of these happened, at least the sub will die at the mods’ hands. Considering Reddit already killed piracy subs like megalinks years ago and slowly banning other piracy subs one by one, the site’s becoming more and more unfitting for piracy discussion and it hasn’t been the most comfortable site for discussing piracy ever since those events. Mods have to impose stricter rules to avoid a ban, at least there’s way more freedom in piracy discussion on Lemmy, just like on Reddit years ago. Reddit will most likely ban all piracy related subs in the next few years, maybe they’ll even pull a Tumblr/Imgur and ban all NSFW subs.
