Arch is hard not just because of the installation, it’s because of everything after. There are so many small things you expect your OS to have set up automatically that you might not even know exist that Arch expects you to do by hand. Arch doesn’t enable TRIM on your SSDs by default, it has no firewall. It doesn’t install microcode, leaving you open to many security exploits. It NEVER cleans old downloaded packages from it’s cache, something you will only find out about after you start looking for where 300GB of your disk space went to. It requires specific arcane syntax commands to install and update packages. You seriously expect someone coming over from Windows and MacOS to do those things or even know they need to do them? I haven’t used Ubuntu in a long time and wouldn’t use it now but it’s still an easy recommendation just because I know it has the least abrasions for a new user to encounter. After they learn how Linux works and feel comfortable, they themselves can branch out and try other distros.

  • Looks good but I personally would switch the CPU to a Ryzen 5 7600x and go for an RX6800xt or RX7800xt instead. Unless the games you play are heavy on the CPU usage you are likely to get way more mileage from a better GPU than the 3D cache and 2 extra cores. You can always buy whatever the latest 3D AM5 chip will be in the future when you feel the need to upgrade, or a used 7800x3D for a much lower price.

You aren’t the only one! Living on the bleeding edge did have its benefits, but I’ll take the reliability of Fedora over dealing with random Arch issues any day (it helps that Fedora still keeps its packages very up to date so you don’t miss much). Arch did teach me a lot so I still appreciate it, and they do have the best wiki!

Gnome just returned as a viable desktop environment option for me! I switched to KDE precisely because of it’s Wayland VRR support, and I’m quite happy with it, but it’s nice to know I can come back to Gnome if I ever want to in the future and not miss out on a crucial feature of my monitor.

  • Are you using the terrain to your advantage? All of the fights you described getting wrecked at can become a breeze just by using the environment to your benefit.

    Fights solutions

During the fight against the skeleton mages before Wither’s coffin, don’t try to fight them in the giant open room, go into Wither’s room and wait for them to come to you while throwing some grease on the stairs before. Have your ranged characters take potshots at them and run back into the room. Same exact strategy for paladins of Tyr, lure them out of the house while dropping nasty surfaces on the exit. Hyenas you want to try to nuke before they turn/run for help, your paladin has Smites for that and Astarion can work his sneak attacks.

    General tips

Wizards are absolutely busted when paired with melee characters even early game (they only get more and more insane as they gain levels). Sleep is your best friend. Guaranteed hit + critical is lethal when used with a Smite or Sneak attack. Hold Person is a near guaranteed kill on a target if it lands, especially if you have a Hasted melee. In general, your spellcaster’s job is crowd control and AoE damage. Shadowheart’s default Domain is pretty meh, I always respec her into Light for way better spells and abilities. As a paladin, 99% of your spellslots should be spent on Divine Smites. Your spells are generally pretty weak (Heroism is pretty good early game), while Smites are absolutely insane. Potions of Haste are crazy powerful early game, use them on your Paladin whenever you are in a tough fight. Wear good armor/shields, Gale can use a shield with no penalties so slap one on him for free +2 AC. The most important advice is action economy is king. Use any means available to deprive enemies of their actions. Line of sight, surfaces like grease or web, crowd control spells. Make them waste an action to Dash to you while you wait for them with a Fireball ready.

  • I was working under the assumption the player kept Karlach alive and un-mind flayered, it’s possible she never even made it to the end because Wyll killed her or the player committed some good old tiefling genocide and she left. The very idea of a DLC is honestly incredibly unlikely, but if one did happen and it wasn’t just some unrelated story, resolving Karlach’s engine troubles is probably the least convoluted one to implement.

  • In my epilogue I had Lae’zel and her mission to talk to with the big important Githzerai guy whose name I cannot remember or pronounce, Gale inviting you to his magic school to talk with his students, Karlach and Wyll going to fix her engine and me trying my best to resist the urge to devour the brains of my fellow companions as a mind flayer (that one was a big surprise when it happened!). With how many possible permutations to the ending there are, I think the most realistic one for a DLC is the straightforward Karlach + Wyll (and possibly you) going to fix her engine, at least that one only has like 4 possible outcomes from what I recall (who goes with Karlach, and if Tav is a mind flayer or not).

  • Cowardly or not, the only tactic that matters is the one that ends the battle with you alive and your enemy not! Concealing your mana seems like an incredibly useful deception tool that I’m surprised isn’t more common in the universe. Then again, it seems like a tactic exclusively meant to deal with demons, and they don’t seem like that common a threat (on the other hand, there is apparently an entire branch of study dedicated to reverse-engineering and improving demon made spells like Zoltraak, so who knows.)

  • Lae'zel romance spoilers

I like how during her sex scene when she demands you to submit, my Berserker has a special dialogue (no checks required) that went something like "MAKE ME! SHOW ME YOUR RAGE!" after which she instantly submits. She acts all tough, but push back and she caves instantly. I did love her romance on a Berserker character, when she asked me to fight her my character was so excited, this guy lives for battle!
